test_generic.sh: like test_kernel.sh but for generic projects
This is obviously copy and pasted from test_kernel.sh where a lot was
written by people smarter than I am. It might be good if everything used
the same big complicated script and test_kernel.sh was just a small wrapper
around it. But I am a bad person. Hopefully a purer soul will some day
be born who can clean up my terrible, terrible code.
