4 compiler flag <code class="code">-D_GLIBCXX_DEBUG</code>. Note that this flag
5 changes the sizes and behavior of standard class templates such
6 as <code class="code">std::vector</code>, and therefore you can only link code
7 compiled with debug mode and code compiled without debug mode if no
8 instantiation of a container is passed between the two translation
9 units.</p><p>By default, error messages are formatted to fit on lines of about
10 78 characters. The environment variable
11 <code class="code">GLIBCXX_DEBUG_MESSAGE_LENGTH</code> can be used to request a
12 different length.</p></div><div class="section"><div class="titlepage"><div><div><h3 class="title"><a id="debug_mode.using.specific"></a>Using a Specific Debug Container</h3></div></div></div><p>When it is not feasible to recompile your entire application, or
13 only specific containers need checking, debugging containers are
14 available as GNU extensions. These debugging containers are
15 functionally equivalent to the standard drop-in containers used in
16 debug mode, but they are available in a separate namespace as GNU
17 extensions and may be used in programs compiled with either release
18 mode or with debug mode. The
19 following table provides the names and headers of the debugging
20 containers:
