241 for use in our XmlSerializer: the XmlSerializer code

243 description of instructions for serializing data, these
244 instructions are later interpreted while using it: Reflection
245 is used to pull all the data. The code generator is the first
246 step into turning the Serializer from an intepreter into a
247 compiler and improving the performance of it.
249 Currently was used internally to implement the WSDL
250 serializer, in the future it will just be part of the standard
251 serialization process.
253 <b>MonoDoc:</b> New providers! Thanks to <a
254 href="http://www.jaggersoft.com/">Jon Jagger</a> for providing

315 Gonzalo rearchitected our Apache module for hosting Mono and
316 ASP.NET. The previous incarnation hosted a Mono runtime on
317 each Apache process, which lead to a slow setup for webforms.
318 The new setup uses a shared mono process for all the incoming
319 requests. Daniel later improved up the new architecture and
320 added dual support, so now in addition to Apache 2.x, we
321 support Apache 1.3 with the same codebase.

384 @item Jul 19th, 2003: Recent developments
386 Since Mono has matured, we have limited the news on the site
387 to major accomplishments that are finished, but this week, it
388 is worth devoting some time to talk about some of the
389 work-in-progress projects that are progressing.
391 Jackson has added support to the IL assembler for generics as
392 well as to the PEAPI library, and it has assembled its first
393 generic program. Support for handling images with generics
394 has been on our file format reader for a while, but the JIT
395 engine is still incomplete.
397 On the XSLT world, Atsushi and Ben continue to make big
398 improvements. Ben recently got the prototype managed XSLT
399 implementation to run its first stylesheet. Although
400 currently Mono uses libxslt to implement the System.Xml.Xsl
401 namespace, to have a fully .NET compliant implementation we
402 will need a managed version, and this is the beginning of it.
404 Lluis recently posted an update on the <a
405 href="http://lists.ximian.com/archives/public/mono-devel-list/2003-July/001550.html">state
406 of WSDL</a> in Mono. Now that the web services runtime is
407 ready, the WSDL compiler becomes more important as a
408 development tool.
410 Atsushi continues his work on the DTD validating reader in
411 System.Xml, as well as improving our XML Schema support.
413 @item Jul 14th, 2003: New build system; IPV6 support.
415 Peter Williams has contributed a new build system that
416 addresses many of the annoyance we had with our previous build
417 system. He has worked on this for a few weeks, and Gonzalo
418 helped test it and get it into CVS. We no longer have the
419 historical dual build system: make for Unix and nant for
420 Windows.
422 This system also offers the opportunity to compile our class
423 libraries with different profiles (.NET 1.0, .NET 1.1 and the
424 various ECMA subsets).

479 Lluis and Gonzalo have checked into CVS the support for web
480 services in the Mono runtime. This allows Mono to work as a
481 web services client. We still require a WSDL compiler to
482 compile the initial stub, but Erik has the beginning of a WSDL
483 compiler ready and Atsushi has continued work on his
484 experimental Xml Schema to C# class generator.
486 As part of this, the Mono Http runtime has been rewritten to
487 increase reliability, scalability and conformance to the
488 specs. Also our io-layer has been extended to not have
489 arbitrary limits. This was done as part of our collaboration
490 with SourceGear.
492 Paolo has commited the new pluggable profiling API to the Mono
493 runtime: now the profiler is built as a module, and a new code
494 coverage analysis has been checked in (and Zoltan already
495 added improvements to it).
497 Mark's Mozilla bindings continue to improve, and we will shortly
498 migrate the Mono documentation browser to use Mozilla, to take
499 advantage of the tutorial's use of CSS.
501 Jackson's work on the IL assembler and Ben on running

503 the Mono toolkit. One of the last missing pieces on the SDK.
505 On the crypto world, we got Sebastien's certificate viewer

1180 assembly, or as a set of P/Invoke, Internal call wrappers).
1182 Martin has got our debugger to support adding breakpoints at
1183 file/line combos. This was more complex than generic
1184 breakpoints in routines, because these breakpoints are set on
1185 routines that probably have not been JITed just yet. Martin's
1186 focus now is on stabilizing our debugger and aim for a public

1189 We have also imported the ECMA documentation into a separate
1190 module, and with the help from Scott Bronson we will have the
1191 necessary XSLT tools to finish our native documentation

1198 Brian Ritchie, Daniel Morgan, Rodrigo Moya and Ville Palo have
1199 been working on various database providers. The MySQL has
1200 seen a lot of work, and a new ODBC provider is now on CVS and
1201 more extensive regression tests have been checked in.
1203 Dick Porter is our background hero and keeps fixing the
1204 low-level bugs in the portability layer. Now the Mono handle
1205 daemon should be a lot more robust and will no longer leave IPC
1206 regions. Gonzalo Paniagua has initiated the migration of XSP
1207 into the System.Web class libraries now that we have a
1208 complete HttpRuntime implementation. This means that you are
1209 able to embed the ASP.NET processor into any web server you
1210 want. This also includes support for the system-wide
1211 configuration file `machine.config'.

1277 have a new strategy to document our APIs (given that we have

1279 inline</a>). This includes the use of a master reference file
1280 that will hold the entry points to document. All master files
1281 for our assemblies have been checked into CVS now.
1283 Sergey Chaban's Mono.PEToolkit and ILASM tools have been
1284 checked into CVS. Although ILASM is old and will soon be
1285 updated, we wanted to get the build issues sorted out.
1287 Martin Baulig's Mono Debugger is still on its early stages,
1288 but you can run and run step by step your C# code and C code
1289 (including the Mono runtime). Dwarf-2 is required to compile
1290 your code. The regular step, step-into, and assembly-level
1291 step and step-into are supported. And comes with a Gtk#
1292 UI. The debugger is written mostly in C# with some C glue
1293 code. Most of the work is on the engine, we will be working
1294 on making a good UI in the future.

1374 compiler and now has moved into improving the compilation
1375 speed and the generated code quality of MCS. Today we got a
1376 50% speedup in the bootstrap of MCS going from 24 seconds to 12 seconds.
1378 Gtk# has been making a lot of progress, some interesting
1379 corner cases are now supported:, you can now create canvas items as
1380 well as using the tree widget. Here is a shot of <a

1383 On the runtime front, focus has been on improving remoting

1545 Paolo today got mono to complete host itself on Linux. This
1546 means that we can now compile the `corlib' using the Mono C#
1547 compiler and the Mono runtime.
1549 Compiling the corlib was rather tricky, because the types that
1550 the compiler uses during the compilation process will come
1551 from the source code it is compiling.
1553 After a few months of work, we have finally fleshed out all
1554 the remaining bugs. Now the next step is to update the makefiles
1555 to compile with the Mono tool-chain.
1557 A recapitulation:

1559 * The Mono C# compiler was able to compile itself on December 28th, 2001.
1560 The resulting image contained errors though.
1562 * The Mono C# compiler was able to self-compile in on
1563 January 3rd, 2002. Becoming a self-hosting compiler on Windows.
1565 * The Mono runtime matured enough by March 12, 2002 that it
1566 was able to bootstrap the Mono C# compiler on Linux using our interpreter.
1567 This means that our development tool was self sufficient.
1569 * On March 26th, the JIT engine was fixed, so we could use this to
1570 run the compiler on Linux.
1572 * Martin fixed the remaining bugs in the compiler that stopped it from
1573 compiling the `corlib'. The resulting image still contained errors though.
1575 * On July 8th, Radek got the PowerPC port to bootstrap
1576 the C# compiler. This is important, because it exposed
1577 various tricky issues in a big-endian system.
1579 * Today: we can bootstrap the compiler using libraries
1580 and the compiler compiled with itself on Linux. The process is complete.

1583 In the meantime, Dietmar has quietly implemented the remaining
1584 pieces of Marshalling in the Mono runtime. This is very
1585 important for the Gtk# guys to move on with their bindings.
1587 To make things more interesting, he replaced most of the
1588 architecture specific code generation for trampolines
1589 (delegates, invocations, function and p/invoke trampolines) to
1590 use CIL. This CIL is then compiled on the flight by the JIT
1591 Compiler engine. By doing this, we have reduced the burden to
1592 port the JITer to new architectures, and that our trampoline
1593 code is cross platform.

1659 Dietmar has been moving a lot of the architecture specific
1660 code in the JIT engine to our internal representation. This
1661 means that porting the JIT is simpler now, as there is less
1662 architecture-specific code to maintain. The inliner, constant
1663 folder and constant propagation are also done at the
1664 architecture independent layer.
1666 Gonzalo is now running the sample ASP.NET applications on
1667 Linux with the Mono runtime. It still needs polishing though,
1668 and help with the various ASP.NET controls would be
1669 appreciated. The ASP.NET community seems more poor than the
1670 PHP community, we need to have a few open source controls to
1671 do things dynamic rendering (libart+gdk-pixbuf again can do
1672 most of the work), charts and components like the kind of
1673 thing you see in the PHP universe: to bring nice GPL code to
1674 the masses of Windows developers, lure them into the world of
1675 Linux.

1678 implements the Win32 semantics. Now only redirection is

1700 compile our corlib. The compilation was tricky because of the way
1701 MCS bootstraps the compile (internally mcs uses the types that are

1705 remaining issues. Currently 102 test pass and 15 fail with
1706 our resulting corlib.

1710 I have been redoing the type lookup system for MCS. The

2459 recently. Currently the JIT engine uses a very simplistic register

2464 On the C# compiler front: language features are now pretty
2465 much complete. The big missing tasks are unsafe code support,
2466 visibility, explicit interface implementation plus static flow
2467 analysis. There are many small bugs that need to be addressed.
