  51 library provides a uniform interface for accessing kernel virtual memory
  52 images, including live systems and crash dumps.
  53 Access to live systems is via
  54 .Pa /dev/mem
  55 while crash dumps can be examined via the core file generated by

  57 The interface behaves identically in both cases.
  58 Memory can be read and written, kernel symbol addresses can be
  59 looked up efficiently, and information about user processes can
  60 be gathered.

  64 .Sh COMPATIBILITY
  65 The kvm interface was first introduced in SunOS.  A considerable
  66 number of programs have been developed that use this interface,
  67 making backward compatibility highly desirable.
  68 In most respects, the Sun kvm interface is consistent and clean.
  69 Accordingly, the generic portion of the interface (i.e.,
  70 .Fn kvm_open ,
  71 .Fn kvm_close ,
  72 .Fn kvm_read ,

  76 has been incorporated into the

  82 The process interface was not kept.  This is not a portability
  83 issue since any code that manipulates processes is inherently
  84 machine dependent.

  86 Finally, the Sun kvm error reporting semantics are poorly defined.
  87 The library can be configured either to print errors to stderr automatically,
  88 or to print no error messages at all.
  89 In the latter case, the nature of the error cannot be determined.
