  14 &lt;p&gt;The ultimate goal is to improve access to technology that can be helpful in\r
  15     solving problems---global problems, local problems, educational problems and\r
  16     everyday problems of efficiency that prevent people from contributing more\r
  17     of their time and effort in more productive endeavors. The fundamental\r
  18     question is, what\r
  19     are the most critical problems an organization like BeagleBoard.org\r
  20     can be involved in solving?\r
  21 &lt;/p&gt;\r
  22 &lt;p&gt;In case you aren&apos;t aware, the\r
  23     BeagleBoard.org Foundation is a 501(c) non-profit US-based corporation, yet\r
  24     there are obvious ties to the for-profit companies Texas Instruments, who\r
  25     pays my salary and produces the processors we use for the board designs, and\r
  26     CircuitCo Electronics, who buys all the components, assembles the boards and\r
  27     ships those boards to distributors around the world.\r
  28 &lt;/p&gt;\r
  29 &lt;h2&gt;What have I learned?&lt;/h2&gt;\r
  30 &lt;p&gt;The everyday second grader and everyday electronics design engineer certainly\r
  31     have different care abouts, but they are also remarkably similar. Beyond\r
  32     the obvious need for a nap in the afternoon that they feel they&apos;ve outgrown,\r
  33     they are also both plagued by incredibly short attention spans.\r
  34 &lt;/p&gt;\r
  35 &lt;p&gt;Innovation wins. I don&apos;t necessarily mean that those people who are the\r
  36     most innovative win, but rather that innovation itself drives change and\r
  37     new innovations spread through the world if we like them or not. It then\r
  38     becomes a requirement that if we want positive change for the world, we\r
  39     must be involved in innovations that produce positive results.\r
  40 &lt;/p&gt;\r
  41 &lt;p&gt;Innovation doesn&apos;t always come in the form of an improved product.\r
  42     Sometimes innovation can be as simple as providing a better description\r
  43     of how to use an existing product, providing a better way of building a\r
  44     product or even have nothing to do with a product at all.\r
  45 &lt;/p&gt;\r
  46 &lt;p&gt;It&apos;s not about what communities of developers can do for a project, it&apos;s\r
  47     about what a project can do for a community. In many respect, we&apos;ve really\r
  48     had this right relative to many other projects, because we&apos;ve focused on\r
  49     what we do well and done what we can to enable others to provide innovation\r
  50     around the project. The Raspberry Pi folks have tought me one place where\r
  51     we&apos;ve done this wrong, and that is in giving a clear goal for the project\r
  52     such that communities of developers understand where their contributions to\r
  53     the project ultimately pay off in having a better world. Certainly that\r
  54     has been our goal the entire time, but how are developers seeing the\r
  55     results?\r
