207 o CVE-2018-14629:
208 All versions of Samba from 4.0.0 onwards are vulnerable to infinite
209 query recursion caused by CNAME loops. Any dns record can be added via
210 ldap by an unprivileged user using the ldbadd tool, so this is a
211 security issue.
213 o CVE-2018-16841:
214 When configured to accept smart-card authentication, Samba's KDC will call
215 talloc_free() twice on the same memory if the principal in a validly signed
216 certificate does not match the principal in the AS-REQ.
218 This is only possible after authentication with a trusted certificate.
220 talloc is robust against further corruption from a double-free with
221 talloc_free() and directly calls abort(), terminating the KDC process.
223 There is no further vulnerability associated with this issue, merely a
224 denial of service.
226 o CVE-2018-16851:
227 During the processing of an LDAP search before Samba's AD DC returns
228 the LDAP entries to the client, the entries are cached in a single
229 memory object with a maximum size of 256MB. When this size is
230 reached, the Samba process providing the LDAP service will follow the
231 NULL pointer, terminating the process.
233 There is no further vulnerability associated with this issue, merely a
234 denial of service.
236 o CVE-2018-16853:
237 A user in a Samba AD domain can crash the KDC when Samba is built in the
238 non-default MIT Kerberos configuration.
240 With this advisory we clarify that the MIT Kerberos build of the Samba
241 AD DC is considered experimental. Therefore the Samba Team will not
242 issue security patches for this configuration.

975 Active Directory replication visualisation
976 ------------------------------------------
978 To work out what is happening in a replication graph, it is sometimes
979 helpful to use visualisations. We introduce a samba-tool subcommand to
980 write Graphviz dot output and generate text-based heatmaps of the
981 distance in hops between DCs.
983 There are two subcommands, two graphical modes, and (roughly) two modes of
984 operation with respect to the location of authority.
986 `samba-tool visualize ntdsconn` looks at NTDS Connections.
987 `samba-tool visualize reps` looks at repsTo and repsFrom objects.
989 In '--distance' mode (default), the distances between DCs are shown in
990 a matrix in the terminal. With '--color=yes', this is depicted as a
991 heatmap. With '--utf8' it is a lttle prettier.
993 In '--dot' mode, Graphviz dot output is generated. When viewed using
994 dot or xdot, this shows the network as a graph with DCs as vertices
995 and connections edges. Certain types of degenerate edges are shown in
996 different colours or line-styles.
998 smbclient reparse point symlink parameters reversed
999 ---------------------------------------------------
1001 A bug in smbclient caused the 'symlink' command to reverse the
1002 meaning of the new name and link target parameters when creating a
1003 reparse point symlink against a Windows server. As this is a
1004 little used feature the ordering of these parameters has been
1005 reversed to match the parameter ordering of the UNIX extensions
1006 'symlink' command. The usage message for this command has also
1007 been improved to remove confusion.
1009 Winbind changes
1010 ---------------
1012 The dependency to global list of trusted domains within
1013 the winbindd processes has been reduced a lot.
1015 The construction of that global list is not reliable and often
1016 incomplete in complex trust setups. In most situations the list is not needed
1017 any more for winbindd to operate correctly. E.g. for plain file serving via SMB
1018 using a simple idmap setup with autorid, tdb or ad. However some more complex
1019 setups require the list, e.g. if you specify idmap backends for specific
1020 domains. Some pam_winbind setups may also require the global list.
1022 If you have a setup that doesn't require the global list, you should set
1023 "winbind scan trusted domains = no".
1025 Improved support for trusted domains (as AD DC)
1026 -----------------------------------------------
1028 The support for trusted domains/forests has improved a lot.
1030 External domain trusts, as well a transitive forest trusts,
1031 are supported in both directions (inbound and outbound)
1032 for Kerberos and NTLM authentication now.
1034 The LSA LookupNames and LookupSids implementations
1035 support resolving names and sids from trusts domains/forest
1036 now. This is important in order to allow Samba based
1037 domain members to make use of the trust.
1039 However there are currently still a few limitations:
1041 - It's not possible to add users/groups of a trusted domain
1042 into domain groups. So group memberships are not expanded
1043 on trust boundaries.

1045 - Both sides of the trust need to fully trust each other!
1046 - No SID filtering rules are applied at all!
1047 - This means DCs of domain A can grant domain admin rights

1051 but the KDC and winbindd ignore them.

1096 This new module integrates with Sophos, F-Secure and ClamAV anti-virus
1097 software to provide scanning and filtering of files on a Samba share.
1100 Local authorization plugin for MIT Kerberos
1101 -------------------------------------------
1103 This plugin controls the relationship between Kerberos principals and AD
1104 accounts through winbind. The module receives the Kerberos principal and the
1105 local account name as inputs and can then check if they match. This can resolve
1106 issues with canonicalized names returned by Kerberos within AD. If the user
1107 tries to log in as 'alice', but the samAccountName is set to ALICE (uppercase),
1108 Kerberos would return ALICE as the username. Kerberos would not be able to map
1109 'alice' to 'ALICE' in this case and auth would fail. With this plugin account
1110 names can be correctly mapped. This only applies to GSSAPI authentication,
1111 not for the geting the initial ticket granting ticket.
1113 REMOVED FEATURES
1114 ================
1116 'net serverid' commands removed
1117 -------------------------------
1119 The two commands 'net serverid list' and 'net serverid wipe' have been
1120 removed, because the file serverid.tdb is not used anymore.
1122 'net serverid list' can be replaced by listing all files in the
1123 subdirectory "msg.lock" of Samba's "lock directory". The unique id
1124 listed by 'net serverid list' is stored in every process' lockfile in
1125 "msg.lock".
1127 'net serverid wipe' is not necessary anymore. It was meant primarily
1128 for clustered environments, where the serverid.tdb file was not
1129 properly cleaned up after single node crashes. Nowadays smbd and
1130 winbind take care of cleaning up the msg.lock and msg.sock directories
1131 automatically.
1133 NT4-style replication based net commands removed
1134 ------------------------------------------------
1136 The following commands and sub-commands have been removed from the
1137 "net" utility:

1140 net rpc vampire ldif
1142 Also, replicating from a real NT4 domain with "net rpc vampire" and
1143 "net rpc vampire keytab" has been removed.
1145 The NT4-based commands were accidentally broken in 2013, and nobody
1146 noticed the breakage. So instead of fixing them including tests (which
1147 would have meant writing a server for the protocols, which we don't
1148 have) we decided to remove them.
1150 For the same reason, the "samsync", "samdeltas" and "database_redo"
1151 commands have been removed from rpcclient.
1153 "net rpc vampire keytab" from Active Directory domains continues to be
1154 supported.
1156 vfs_aio_linux module removed
1157 ----------------------------
1159 The current Linux kernel aio does not match what Samba would
1160 do. Shipping code that uses it leads people to false
1161 assumptions. Samba implements async I/O based on threads by default,
1162 there is no special module required to see benefits of read and write
1163 request being sent do the disk in parallel.
