176 All current released versions of Samba are vulnerable to clickjacking in the
177 Samba Web Administration Tool (SWAT). When the SWAT pages are integrated into
178 a malicious web page via a frame or iframe and then overlaid by other content,
179 an attacker could trick an administrator to potentially change Samba settings.
181 In order to be vulnerable, SWAT must have been installed and enabled
182 either as a standalone server launched from inetd or xinetd, or as a

293 This is is the first stable release of Samba 4.0.
295 This release contains the best of all of Samba's
296 technology parts, both a file server (that you can reasonably expect
297 to upgrade existing Samba 3.x releases to) and the AD domain
298 controller work previously known as 'Samba4'.
300 Major enhancements in Samba 4.0.0 include:
302 Active Directory services
303 =========================
305 Samba 4.0 supports the server-side of the Active Directory logon
306 environment used by Windows 2000 and later, so we can do full domain
307 join and domain logon operations with these clients.
309 Our Domain Controller (DC) implementation includes our own built-in
310 LDAP server and Kerberos Key Distribution Center (KDC) as well as the
311 Samba3-like logon services provided over CIFS. We correctly generate
312 the infamous Kerberos PAC, and include it with the Kerberos tickets we
313 issue.
315 When running an AD DC, you only need to run 'samba' (not smbd/nmbd/winbindd),
316 as the required services are co-coordinated by this master binary.
317 The tool to administer the Active Directory services is called 'samba-tool'.

324 File Services
325 =============
327 Samba 4.0.0 ships with two distinct file servers. We now use the
328 file server from the Samba 3.x series 'smbd' for all file serving by
329 default.
331 Samba 4.0 also ships with the 'NTVFS' file server. This file server
332 is what was used prior to the beta2 release of Samba 4.0, and is
333 tuned to match the requirements of an AD domain controller. We
334 continue to support this, not only to provide continuity to
335 installations that have deployed it as part of an AD DC, but also as a
336 running example of the NT-FSA architecture we expect to move smbd to in
337 the longer term.
339 For pure file server work, the binaries users would expect from that
340 series (smbd, nmbd, winbindd, smbpasswd) continue to be available.
343 DNS
344 ===
346 As DNS is an integral part of Active Directory, we also provide two DNS
347 solutions, a simple internal DNS server for 'out of the box' configurations
348 and a more elaborate BIND plugin using the BIND DLZ mechanism in versions
349 9.8 and 9.9. During the provision, you can select which backend to use.
350 With the internal backend, your DNS server is good to go.
351 If you chose the BIND_DLZ backend, a configuration file will be generated
352 for bind to make it use this plugin, as well as a file explaining how to
353 set up bind.
356 NTP
357 ===
359 To provide accurate timestamps to Windows clients, we integrate with
360 the NTP project to provide secured NTP replies. To use you need to
361 start ntpd and configure it with the 'restrict ... ms-sntp' and
362 ntpsigndsocket options.
365 Python Scripting Interface
366 ==========================
368 A new scripting interface has been added to Samba 4, allowing
369 Python programs to interface to Samba's internals, and many tools and
370 internal workings of the DC code is now implemented in python.
373 Known Issues
374 ============
376 - Replication of DNS data from one AD server to another may not work.
377 The DNS data used by the internal DNS server and bind9_dlz is stored
378 in an application partition in our directory. The replication of
379 this partition is not yet reliable.
381 - Replication may fail on FreeBSD due to getaddrinfo() rejecting names
382 containing _. A workaround will be in a future release.
384 - samba_upgradeprovision should not be run when upgrading to this release
385 from a recent release. No important database format changes have
386 been made since alpha16.
388 - Installation on systems without a system iconv (and developer
389 headers at compile time) is known to cause errors when dealing with
390 non-ASCII characters.
392 - Domain member support in the 'samba' binary is in its infancy, and
393 is not comparable to the support found in winbindd. As such, do not
394 use the 'samba' binary (provided for the AD server) on a member
395 server.
397 - There is no NetBIOS browsing support (network neighbourhood)
398 available for the AD domain controller. (Support in nmbd and smbd
399 for classic domains and member/standalone servers is unchanged).
401 - Clock Synchronisation is critical. Many 'wrong password' errors are
402 actually due to Kerberos objecting to a clock skew between client
403 and server. (The NTP work in the previous alphas are partly to assist
404 with this problem).
406 - The DRS replication code may fail. Please contact the team if you
407 experience issues with DRS replication, as we have fixed many issues
408 here in response to feedback from our production users.
410 - Linux inotify will now only be supported on systems where glibc also supports
411 it (for details, please refer to bug #8850).
414 Upgrading
415 =========
417 Users upgrading from Samba 3.x domain controllers and wanting to use
418 Samba 4.0 as an AD DC should use the 'samba-tool domain
419 classicupgrade' command. See the wiki for more details:

422 Users upgrading from Samba 4.0 alpha and beta releases since alpha15
423 should run 'samba-tool dbcheck --cross-ncs --fix' before re-starting
424 Samba. Users upgrading from earlier alpha releases should contact the
425 team for advice.
427 Users upgrading an AD DC from any previous release should run
428 'samba-tool ntacl sysvolreset' to re-sync ACLs on the sysvol share
429 with those matching the GPOs in LDAP and the defaults from an initial

434 you'll have to add '-dns' to the 'server services' option,
435 as the internal dns server (SAMBA_INTERNAL) is the default now.

565 to our Access Control List (ACL) code, particularly for the Active
566 Directory Domain Controller, but also in our general purpose file

569 These changes are important, as they enable Group Policy Objects to work
570 correctly, allow administrators to impose restrictions on some users
571 reading certain parts of the directory and correctly propagating
572 inherited ACLs down the LDAP directory tree.
574 Users of the Active Directory Domain Controller upgrading from any
575 previous release should run 'samba-tool ntacl sysvolreset' to re-sync
576 ACLs on the sysvol share with those matching the GPOs in LDAP and the
577 defaults from an initial provision. This will set an underlying POSIX
