  10         The Samba documentation for 1.9.17 has had some of its content
  11         updated and a new structure has been put in place. However, since
  12         this is all rather new the documentation format of previous
  13         versions will remain in place.

  15         Note in particular two files - <your OS>_INSTALL.txt and DIAGNOSIS.txt
  16         There is the potential for there to be many *INSTALL.txt files, one
  17         for each OS that Samba supports. However we are moving all this into
  18         the new structure. For now, most people will be using UNIX_INSTALL.txt.

  20         You pay close attention to all the files with a
  21         .txt extension. Most problems can be solved by reference to the
  22         two files mentioned.

  24         The new documentation can be accessed starting from Samba-meta-FAQ.html,
  25         in the docs/faq directory. This is incomplete, but to quote from the
  26         abstract, it:

  28         "contains overview information for the Samba suite of programs,
  29         a quick-start guide, and pointers to all other Samba documentation.
  30         Other FAQs exist for specific client and server issues, and HOWTO
  31         documents for more extended topics to do with Samba software."

  36         Please pay close attention to the reference smb.conf file
  37         smb.conf.default that has now been included as the master guide.

  39         Do read the smb.conf manual page in considering what settings are
  40         appropriate for your site.

  43 packaging       (Only for those wishing to build binary distributions):

  45         Currently support is included only for RedHat Linux. We hope that
  46         other Unix OS vendors will contribute their binary distribution
  47         packaging control files - and we hope to make their binary packages
  48         available on the master ftp site under:

  54         To build your own binary files you will need a suitable ansi C
  55         compiler. Also, you must edit the enclosed "Makefile" as required
  56         for your operating system platform. Then just run:
  57                 a) make
  58                 b) make install
  59         then
  60                 c) set up your configuration files.

  62         NOTE: OS Vendors who provide Samba binary packages will generally
  63         integrate all Samba files into their preferred directory locations.
  64         These may differ from the default location ALWAYS used by the Samba
  65         sources. Please be careful when upgrading a vendor provided binary
  66         distribution from files you have built yourself.
