The latest version of this FAQ can be found at http://www.linuxchix.org/content
/docs/faqs/technical.html?listname=courses
This FAQ is posted to most LinuxChix mailing lists every month.
1. Mailing lists: Technical questions
1.1. How do I unsubscribe?
There are three common ways:
Go to http://mailman.linuxchix.org/mailman/listinfo/courses and enter your
email address in the "Edit Options" box. From there, you should get a list
of information about your subscription, including an option to unsubscribe.
Send a mail to courses-request@linuxchix.org with the subject
"unsubscribe" (or click on this link: mailto:
courses-request@linuxchix.org?subject=unsubscribe)
* By asking a list admin.
If you're having a lot of trouble with unsubscribing, ask a human. :) The
list admins' addresses are on the bottom of the pages on the web interface,
and they can also be contacted using the courses-admin@linuxchix.org
1.2. Why can't I just hit 'Reply' in my mail reader and have my reply go to the
lists? I have to type in the address of the list myself!
The LinuxChix lists do not have the Reply-To header set to the list address.
Hence when you press Reply, the reply goes to the original sender.
There are many good reasons why LinuxCHix lists do not have the Reply-To set.
These reasons are explained in Chip Rosenthal's essay Reply-To munging
considered harmful. If you have an argument that is not addressed in this
essay, bring it up on the lists and the LinuxChix admins may reconsider their
1.3. So, if I can't hit 'Reply', how can I reply to the lists?
Almost all mail readers have a 'Reply All' or 'Group Reply' option, which will
reply to the original author and Cc the list. Most people choose to reply this
If you wish to reply just to the list, you can either put the list address in
the To field manually, or you can use a mail reader that sets and respects the
Mail-Followup-To header. Mutt, for example, can be configured to recognise
lists you are subscribed to and has a 'List Reply' function in addition to
'Reply' and 'Group Reply'.
1.4. I'm not getting mail from linuxchix anymore. What's wrong?
There are a few possibilities:
* No one has sent any mail to the list(s) you're on for a little while.
To check if this is the case, visit the archives at http://
mailman.linuxchix.org/pipermail/courses/.
* You were bouncing mail and have had mail delivery (temporarily) disabled by
If you bounce too many messages, the list software stops trying to send you
mail. To check if this is the case, go to http://mailman.linuxchix.org/
mailman/listinfo/courses, enter your email address in the box near the
bottom where the button says "Edit Options", and check to make sure that
you are set to be receiving mail. Change it if you're not and your address
If you didn't know you were bouncing already, you can ask for a copy of the
bounced message to help you figure out what went wrong.
* The mailing list is actually down.
Try pinging linuxchix.org to see if the machine is up and your machine can
reach it. If it is, try contacting one of the admins to find out what's
1.5. My mail got "held for approval" because it said I wasn't a subscriber.
If you want the mail to go through right away, your best option is to resend it
from the address at which you're subscribed. If you resend, don't be surprised
if you see a duplicate copy come through later when a listadmin approves it
without noticing that you've resent.
If you're not in a hurry or don't want to or can't resend, most legitimate
posts will be approved by an admin when she gets them and has time to deal with
them. This usually takes less than a day, sometimes two.
1.6. My mail to the linuxchix lists isn't getting through at all!
It is possible that there is some error with the machine hosting the
linuxchix.org mailing lists. Check the archives of the list, linked from http:/
/mailman.linuxchix.org/mailman/listinfo to see if your post has appeared. Check
if there have been other posts to the list in the last few days. Mail the list
admins, simply place -admin after the list name (the courses admins' email is
<courses-admin@linuxchix.org>) to ask if there is a problem.
At present, the LinuxChix hosts are using Realtime Blackhole List filtering on
LinuxChix lists. If your mail is originating from a computer that is a known
open relay, then your post to LinuxChix will bounce. If this is the case, and
you are using an ISP account, you should be using their SMTP server to relay
your mail rather than connecting directly - ask their technical support what
the SMTP server's address is and ask them or us how to set up your mail to go
via their server. If not then you might want to investigate how to be removed
from the RBL. You might want to let us know by asking someone to forward mail
1.7. I keep making the mistake of sending from the wrong address. Do I need to
We prefer that you do subscribe any address you use frequently for posting.
Since you can subscribe an address without receiving mail to that address, it's
often easier to just subscribe an address than to remember to switch your From:
Subscribing without receving mail ("nomail" option)
* Subscribe the address from which you want to send mail.
* Go to the listinfo page http://mailman.linuxchix.org/mailman/listinfo/
courses and enter the email address in the "Edit Options" box at the
* On this options page, set "Disable mail delivery" to "On", enter your
password in the box at the bottom, and press "Submit my Changes"
Voila! Now you can send mail from your address without having it held for
1.8. How do I get my password?
Your passwords are mailed out to you once a month, but if you want it sooner,
go to the listinfo page http://mailman.linuxchix.org/mailman/listinfo/courses
and enter your email address in the "Edit Options" box at the bottom of the
page. This will bring up a page of information about your subscription, and you
can click on the button marked "Email my password to me"
1.9. Someone suggested I turn off HTML Mail! Why? How?
Short answer: Instructions for turning off HTML mail in many clients can be
found at http://www.expita.com/nomime.html
HTML formatting is used to format your mail in the same way that web pages can
be formatted. It is used by default by many mail readers.
However, there are many many people subscribed to the LinuxChix lists (and to
most other lists). A substantial number of those people do not like to receive
These groups include:
* Some subscribers who use text-based email clients that can't display web
pages (please note that most common text-based email clients, including
Pine and Mutt, can in fact produce a text version of HTML mail, if you
don't know how to do this with your client, you might want to ask the <
techtalk@linuxchix.org> list about it).
* Subscribers who get the digest version of the lists (they receive one mail
a day containing all the mail to the list that day, rather than receiving
each mail as it is sent to the list). Your HTML mail is simply bundled in
with all the text mails and loses the headers that allow most mailers to
recognize and render your HTML mail properly.
* Subscribers who have expensive and slow connections. HTML mail is larger
than text mail because of all the extra formatting that comes with it.
* Our generous server hosts, whose server must send out hundreds of copies of
your large HTML mails (if the HTML adds 500 bytes to your email, that could
mean 100K of extra work for the LinuxChix server!). Our hosts are
volunteers and their bandwidth is not infinite!

1.6. Someone just posted something smart and useful to a LinuxChix list!
Can I forward it elsewhere?
1.7. Are there any other policies?
The latest version of this FAQ can be found at http://www.linuxchix.org/content
/docs/faqs/policy.html
Discussion of this FAQ is welcome on the <issues@linuxchix.org> list.
This FAQ is posted once every three months to every public LinuxChix list.
1.1. What are LinuxChix lists for?
LinuxChix lists are designed to be helpful, friendly, female-oriented lists for
women interested in Linux. There are lists for technical questions, discussion
of women and technology, learning about Linux, and social chat.
1.2. Who are LinuxChix lists for?
LinuxChix lists are lists for women interested in Linux.
1.3. Are men welcome too?
Men are welcome on most LinuxChix lists, provided that they realise and respect
that the lists are primarily intended as lists for women.
At present, there is one exception - the grrls-only@linuxchix.org mailing list,
which is female-only.
1.4. Are there any rules?
LinuxChix was founded in part due to the aggressiveness of existing technical
lists. If you do tell someone to read the manual, which is sometimes the most
useful answer to a technical question, do it politely and at least tell them
where to find the manual, and invite them to come back with any questions that
the manual doesn't answer for them.
There is no prior knowledge required to post to any LinuxChix technical list.
Questions at any level are equally welcome, and should be treated as such.
1.5. I found this very interesting article about Free Software/women/technology
/politics that I think everyone should read and discuss! Can I forward it?
Please do not post material to the lists that was not written by you, including
articles and forwarded material, unless you are certain that the copyright
owner of the material allows redistribution. Otherwise you are violating the
owner's copyright. If you come across an interesting article that you want to
discuss, you should post a link to the article and a summary of the parts you
found interesting. If it is not available online, the only thing you can do is
post a detailed description of how to find it (author, title, journal/newspaper
/book title, publisher and so on).
1.6. Someone just posted something smart and useful to a LinuxChix list! Can I
forward it elsewhere?
The copyright of any message sent to LinuxChix lists is owned by the author of
the message, and is only free for redistribution if the copyright owner
specifically allows it. You therefore shouldn't forward LinuxChix messages off
the LinuxChix without specific permission from the author. If they didn't give
such permission in the body of their message, you could mail them and ask for
it, but please respect their decision either way.
If it was posted to a publically archived list (only techtalk is publically
archived at present), you could give other people a link to the archived copy
Generally, as in all email, it is accepted that you can quote relevant parts of
the message you are replying to in your message. You should keep this to a
minimum, mainly for bandwidth reasons. And everyone is subscribed, so we all
saw the previous message.
1.7. Are there any other policies?
It is strongly recommended that all subscribers to any LinuxChix list also
subscribe to the announce@linuxchix.org mailing list. It is very low traffic
and all messages relevant to the entire community will be posted there.
If anyone has a message for the entire community, such as changes to LinuxChix
as a whole, or announcements of new lists or chapters, they are asked to post
them to announce@linuxchix.org and not crosspost them to any other lists.
LinuxChix lists are hosted by volunteers. Please be nice to them and don't send
large mails that will overload their machine. All binary attachments, and mails
over 20Kb in size will be rejected. Post a link to any information larger than
this, or invite people to email you privately to get you to send them a copy.
All posts to LinuxChix lists should be in plain text, rather than HTML. Not all
LinuxChix can read mail in HTML format. It can also be very hard on LinuxChix
who receive mail in digest form (all messages for the day bundled into one

reply to the original author and Cc the list.

There are three common ways:
Go to http://mailman.linuxchix.org/mailman/listinfo/courses and enter your

list admins' addresses are on the bottom of the pages on the web interface,

If you have an argument that is not addressed in this

without noticing that you've resent.

The latest version of this FAQ can be found at http://www.linuxchix.org/content

This FAQ is posted to most LinuxChix mailing lists every month.
1. Mailing lists: Technical questions
1.1. How do I subscribe?
There are three common ways:
Go to http://mailman.linuxchix.org/mailman/listinfo/courses and follow the
instructions given there.
Send a mail to courses-request@linuxchix.org with the subject "subscribe"
(or click on this link: mailto:courses-request@linuxchix.org?subject=
* By asking a list admin.
If you're having a lot of trouble with subscribing, ask a human. :) The
list admins' addresses are on the bottom of the pages on the web interface,
and they can also be contacted using the courses-admin@linuxchix.org
1.3. How do I change my subscription address?
In mailman 2.0.* there is no way to change an address, so you have to do this
by subscribing the new address and unsubscribing the old address. (See above
for how to do each of these.)
If you may still post occasionally from the old address (eg some of your mail
clients may be configured for the old address), you may want to leave the old
address subscribed and set it 'nomail'. For more information, see the question
"How I turn off mail delivery for an address?"
1.4. How do I get my password?
Your passwords are mailed out to you once a month, but if you want it sooner,
go to the listinfo page http://mailman.linuxchix.org/mailman/listinfo/courses
and enter your email address in the "Edit Options" box at the bottom of the
page. This will bring up a page of information about your subscription, and you
can click on the button marked "Email my password to me"
1.5. How do I turn off mail delivery for an address? ('nomail' option)
If you have an argument that is not addressed in this
essay, bring it up on the lists and the LinuxChix admins may reconsider their
If you didn't know you were bouncing already, you can ask the list admins
for a copy of the bounced message to help you figure out what went wrong.
* The mailing list is actually down.
Try pinging linuxchix.org to see if the machine is up and your machine can
reach it. If it is, try contacting one of the admins to find out what's
1.9. My mail got "held for approval" because it said I wasn't a subscriber.
If you want the mail to go through right away, your best option is to re-send
it from the address at which you're subscribed. If you re-send, don't be
surprised if you see a duplicate copy come through later when a listadmin
approves it without noticing that you've resent.
If you're not in a hurry or don't want to or can't re-send, most legitimate
posts will be approved by an admin when she gets them and has time to deal with
them. This usually takes less than a day, sometimes two, but can take longer if
the list admins are busy.
If this happens more than a few times, please see the question below "Do I need
to subscribe my other address(es)?"
1.10. I keep making the mistake of sending from the wrong address. Do I need to
subscribe my other address(es)?
We prefer that you do subscribe any address you use frequently for posting.
This lowers the workload on our volunteers *and* means that your posts will get
through to the lists more quickly. Since you can subscribe an address without
receiving mail to that address, it's often easier to just subscribe an address
than to remember to switch your From: line!
To do this, subscribe the address (see instructions under "How do I subscribe?
") and then disable mail delivery (see instructions under "How do I disable
mail delivery to an address?").
1.11. My mail to the linuxchix lists isn't getting through at all!
It is possible that there is some error with the machine hosting the
linuxchix.org mailing lists. Check the archives of the list, linked from http:/

The latest version of this FAQ can be found at http://www.linuxchix.org/content
/docs/faqs/policy.html
Discussion of this FAQ is welcome on the <issues@linuxchix.org> list.
This FAQ is posted once every three months to every public LinuxChix list.
1. Membership Policies
1.4. Is LinuxChix English-only?
At present, all LinuxChix posts are in the English language. This is more due
to the coordinators of LinuxChix living in English speaking countries than
If anyone wants to volunteer to run LinuxChix lists in other languages, they
might want to ask on some of the lists if there are many other Chix who would
be interested in a list in their language and if so, join the
volunteers@linuxchix.org list and volunteer to run it.
Alternatively, they could start a language-based chapter, and run a mailing
list on a separate server. In this case they should join the
chapters@linuxchix.org list.
2.2. Are there any other policies?
LinuxChix lists are hosted by volunteers. Please be nice to them and don't send
large mails that will overload their machine. All binary attachments, and mails
over 20Kb in size will be rejected. Post a link to any information larger than
this, or invite people to email you privately to get you to send them a copy.
All posts to LinuxChix lists should be in plain text, rather than HTML. Not all
LinuxChix can read mail in HTML format. It can also be very hard on LinuxChix
who receive mail in digest form (all messages for the day bundled into one
2.3. Why doesn't the reply-to point to the list?
There are two articles on the topic of altering a mailing list's 'Reply-To'
header so that using the 'reply' option in the mail client makes mail go just
to the list. I recommend that you read both of them. They are Reply-To Munging
Considered Harmful and Reply-To Munging Considered Useful. I also have a couple
of considerations that aren't explicitly stated in either article.
If I don't change the reply-to, I respect the choice of people who have
explicitly set it in their mail client. If I have a technical way of telling
who has and who hasn't set it in their client, and only change the ones that
haven't set it, then using 'reply' would be a mix of 'to the sender' and 'to
the mailing list', and that would be confusing.
Mail clients have been producing a 'reply-to-list' option. This is, in my
opinion, the best technical solution.
Some mailing list software (including Mailman) now includes an option to avoid
mailing a recipient if the recipient is also cc'd in a message. This minimises
duplicate messages, and is a technical solution for one of the biggest issues.
Discussion of new, additional points on the subject is on-topic for most
LinuxChix lists. Discussion of the existing points in relation to LinuxChix
lists is welcome on the open-topic mailing lists, but not specific-topic lists.
(It's on-topic for technical lists if you're asking about it for -your- lists.)
A personal note: Please accept that discussing the known points with me will
not make me change my mind about how the LinuxChix lists are set up. New points
might, but not the ones I've already thought through. Thank you. Jenn.
3.2. Can I forward LinuxChix posts to people who are not subscribed to
No. Not without the author's permission. Assume you do not have such permission
if you are uncertain.
There are several reasons, both legal and ethical, why this is so.
The copyright of any message sent to LinuxChix lists is owned by the author of
the message, and is only free for redistribution if the copyright owner
specifically allows it. You therefore mustn't forward LinuxChix messages off
the LinuxChix lists without specific permission from the author. If they didn't
give such permission in the body of their message, you could mail them and ask
for it, but please respect their decision either way.
Members make posts to LinuxChix on the understanding that they will not be
redistributed offlist. Some members make personal posts trusting in this
understanding. LinuxChix has successful mailing lists that discusses sensitive
topics and these can only function based on this understanding. Members
forwarding posts offlist therefore breach this understanding with the author
and with LinuxChix, hurting both the author of the message and the function of
many of the LinuxChix lists as a whole.
If the message was posted to list publically archived on LinuxChix (some of the
technical lists are publically archived), you could give other people a link to
the archived copy of their post.
Generally, as in all email, when you reply to the mail it is accepted that you
can quote relevant parts of the message you are replying to in your message.
You should keep this to a minimum, mainly for bandwidth reasons. And everyone
is subscribed, so we all saw the previous message.
3.3. I notice that many of the lists are privately archived or have no archives
available. Can I put up my own archive?
Absolutely not. Any lists not publically archived are not archived for a
reason. These reasons include letting people have sensitive personal
discussions without making them available for searching and reading for years
to come. You must not archive our lists or otherwise republish them.
4. List Complaints and Disputes
4.1. I have a complaint about a message posted to a LinuxChix list. What should
In general, LinuxChix lists welcome differing opinions. If your complaint falls
within the basic 'be polite, be helpful' guidelines (which includes being
polite and helpful to the author), by all means, discuss your problem on any
list for which it is on-topic.
As a guideline, politely arguing with a post is fine, attacking the poster
Any problems you have with any material posted to the LinuxChix that can't be
addressed in a polite and helpful way on-list, for example because it concerns
issues you would rather not discuss on list, or because personal attacks,
privacy issues, third parties, or legal issues such as defamation are involved
should be raised with the list administrators or the LinuxChix coordinator. The
list administrators can be contacted at LISTNAME-admin@linuxchix.org. The
co-ordinator is currently Jenn Vesperman, who can be reached at <

The latest version of this FAQ can be found at http://www.linuxchix.org/content
/docs/faqs/policy.html
Discussion of this FAQ is welcome on the <issues@linuxchix.org> list.
This FAQ is posted once every three months to every public LinuxChix list.
1. Membership Policies
Not all

This FAQ is posted to most LinuxChix mailing lists every month.
1. Subscribing, Unsubscribing and Configuring Your Subscription
1.1. How do I subscribe?
There are three common ways:
Go to http://mailman.linuxchix.org/mailman/listinfo/courses and follow the
instructions given there.
Send a mail to courses-request@linuxchix.org with the subject "subscribe"

* By asking a list admin.
If you're having a lot of trouble with subscribing, ask a human. :) The
list admins' addresses are on the bottom of the pages on the web interface,
and they can also be contacted using the courses-admin@linuxchix.org
2. Replying to the Lists
If you have an argument that is not addressed in this
essay, bring it up on the lists and the LinuxChix admins may reconsider their
2.2. So, if I can't hit 'Reply', how can I reply to the lists?
Almost all mail readers have a 'Reply All' or 'Group Reply' option, which will
reply to the original author and Cc the list. Most people choose to reply this
If you wish to reply just to the list, you can either put the list address in
the To field manually, or you can use a mail reader that has a 'Reply To List'
function. Some mailers which have a 'Reply To List' function are: KMail and
mutt. Let us know if you hear of any more!
3. Problems with the Lists: Missing Mail and Mail Held for Approval
Mail the list
admin using the the address made by placing -admin after the list name (the
courses admins' email is <courses-admin@linuxchix.org>) to ask if there is a
At present, the LinuxChix hosts are using Realtime Blackhole List filtering on
LinuxChix lists.
If no then you might want to investigate how to be removed
from the RBL. You might want to let us know by asking someone to forward mail
Your HTML mail is simply bundled in
with all the text mails and loses the headers that allow most mailers to
recognise and render your HTML mail properly.

4. List Complaints and Disputes

Thank you. Jenn.
The
co-ordinator is currently Jenn Vesperman, who can be reached at <
jenn@linuxchix.org>.

to subscribe my other address(es)?
3.4. My mail to the linuxchix lists isn't getting through at all!
4.1. Someone suggested I turn off HTML Mail! Why? How?
The latest version of this FAQ can be found at http://www.linuxchix.org/content

This FAQ is posted to most LinuxChix mailing lists every month.
1. Subscribing, Unsubscribing and Configuring Your Subscription
1.1. How do I subscribe?
There are three common ways:
Go to http://mailman.linuxchix.org/mailman/listinfo/courses and follow the
instructions given there.
Send a mail to courses-request@linuxchix.org with the subject "subscribe"
(or click on this link: mailto:courses-request@linuxchix.org?subject=
* By asking a list admin.
If you're having a lot of trouble with subscribing, ask a human. :) The
list admins' addresses are on the bottom of the pages on the web interface,
and they can also be contacted using the courses-admin@linuxchix.org
1.2. How do I unsubscribe?
There are three common ways:
Go to http://mailman.linuxchix.org/mailman/listinfo/courses and enter your
email address in the "Edit Options" box. From there, you should get a list
of information about your subscription, including an option to unsubscribe.
Send a mail to courses-request@linuxchix.org with the subject
"unsubscribe" (or click on this link:
mailto:courses-request@linuxchix.org?subject=unsubscribe)
* By asking a list admin.
If you're having a lot of trouble with unsubscribing, ask a human. :) The
list admins' addresses are on the bottom of the pages on the web interface,
and they can also be contacted using the courses-admin@linuxchix.org
2. Replying to the Lists
If you have an argument that is not addressed in this
essay, bring it up on the lists and the LinuxChix admins may reconsider their
Mail the list
admin using the the address made by placing -admin after the list name (the
courses admins' email is <courses-admin@linuxchix.org>) to ask if there is a
At present, the LinuxChix hosts are using Realtime Blackhole List filtering on
LinuxChix lists.
If no then you might want to investigate how to be removed
from the RBL. You might want to let us know by asking someone to forward mail
Your HTML mail is simply bundled in
with all the text mails and loses the headers that allow most mailers to
recognise and render your HTML mail properly.

This is the general LinuxChix FAQ. You can find the latest version online
at http://www.linuxchix.org/content/docs/faqs/.
This FAQ is posted once a month to every public LinuxChix list.
Discussion of this FAQ is welcome on <issues@linuxchix.org>.
1. Why did Deb start LinuxChix?
2. Is LinuxChix solely for women? Are the lists solely for women? How
3. If men are welcome, why call it LinuxChix?
4. What's a linuxchix chapter and how do I find one?
5. How do I start a LinuxChix chapter in my region?
6. Who drew the LinuxChix logo?
7. Who hosts the LinuxChix site and mailing lists?
8. Who is running LinuxChix?
1. Why did Deb start LinuxChix?
This was Deb's answer in the original FAQ:
There are two answers to this question. First, I started LinuxChix
because I thought it would be fun. Happily, I can report that my
suspicions were correct. The second answer is a bit longer.
I started LinuxChix because I got tired of seeing new users being
browbeaten for asking "stupid" questions. I got tired of seeing people
respond to perfectly valid questions with "RTFM", or "we're not a Linux
help channel", and other such not-terribly-useful things. I got tired
of the locker-room mentality of the more popular online Linux forums.
I started LinuxChix as an attempt to create a more hospitable community
in which people can discuss Linux, a community that encourages
participation, that doesn't allow the quieter among us to be drowned
out by the vocal minority.
There is a growing misconception that this vocal minority is
representative of the Linux community in general, and I wanted to do my
part in making sure that new Linux users realize that this is not the
case. The vast majority of the people in the Linux community are good,
friendly, helpful, generous people. These people don't have time to sit
and post on a web-based Linux forum, however, because they're too busy
out there trying to get real work done. The result is that the popular
web-based forums tend to be populated largely by people who have little
better to do with their time.
And that vocal minority has a strong tendency to be brash, harsh, and
intolerant of people who know less than they. This scares new users
off, and reflects badly on the Linux community as a whole. LinuxChix is
one attempt to offset the damage done.
I'm also happy to report that it's working. One very telling quote:
"The large egos are what turned me away from seriously running linux
for years. It's only once linuxchix came along that I felt comfortable
enough to really dive into it."
And that's exactly why I started LinuxChix. To give women who use Linux
a comfortable environment in which to discuss the OS they love; to
create a community that encourages and helps new users; to make others
realize that the vocal minority does not necessarily represent the
Linux community in general.
2. Is LinuxChix solely for women? Are the lists solely for women? How
LinuxChix is intended to be an inclusive group where everyone is and
feels welcome. We do ask, however, that everyone keep in mind that it
is primarily inteded as a womens' group. What this means is: sexist
remarks are unwelcome. In fact, Deb originally asked that everyone
avoid all sweeping generalizations: sexism can be targetted at men as
well, which is also significantly uncool. All the silly -isms are
discouraged and will not be tolerated: sexism, ageism, racism, etc.
No, the lists are for everyone, with the exception of the
<grrls-only@linuxchix.org> list, which is women-only.
As long as people are generally polite and helpful, anyone is
welcome on the other lists. The LinuxChix co-ordinator reserves the
right to change this policy at any time. Please try to remember that
these are lists primarily meant for women. Act as if your
mom/sister/daughter were subscribed, and everything should be fine
"This is a list for respectful and supportive discussion of
issues regarding women, linux, and their intersection.
Discussion of gender issues is encouraged, however we're
striving for an environment free of the same old patriarchal
influence we face at work and from the other high-tech boy's
--Taken from discussion on the list.
Remember the posting guidelines: 1) be polite, 2) be helpful. That's
Some of the chapters have found it necessary to restrict their
membership to women. Check the chapter's individual guidelines on
the website, or ask the chapter's membership.
3. If men are welcome, why call it LinuxChix?
LinuxChix is intended to be primarily for women. The name is an
accurate reflection of that fact. Men are welcome because we do not
want this group to be exclusive. Also, not everyone who considers
themselves female is necessarily biologically female. "Sex" and
"gender" are very different things.
4. What's a linuxchix chapter and how do I find one?
The LinuxChix regional chapters exist in several places around the
world. These chapters have been formed to give women who use or are
interested in learning about Linux a way to meet other women with
similar interests. These chapters are loosely organized, informal, and
they don't require (or imply) any form of membership or fees. Mostly
it's just women hanging out with women, talking tech over coffee
(and/or cheesecake :). You can find the list of chapters at
http://www.linuxchix.org/content/chapters/
5. How do I start a LinuxChix chapter in my region?
Starting a chapter is quite simple. Find people on our lists or
elsewhere who live in your area and might be interested in joining.
Once you have some people who are interested, you should arrange
semi-regular meetings. Holding "official" meetings once per month is
usually standard, with "unofficial" meetings happening more
spontaneously as people decide they want or need them.
Email <lcx.chapters@linuxchix.org> and give them contact details for
your chapter (your email at a minimum, or a chapter website if there is
one) so that they can link to you from the chapters webpage.
There are more suggestions for starting a chapter at
http://www.linuxchix.org/content/chapters/founding_a_chapter.
6. Who drew the LinuxChix logo?
The original LinuxChix logo was done for Deb by her immensely talented
friend Tom B. You can view his online portfolio at
http://www.tom-b.com/. A million thanks to Tom for doing up such a
The other logos have been done by a variety of people. (If you made a
logo and would like to be credited by name, email
<lcx.faqs@linuxchix.org>.)
7. Who hosts the LinuxChix site and mailing lists?
For the first year of its life, LinuxChix was hosted by the very
friendly and helpful people at Hub.org Networking Services.
Between March 2000 and June 2001, LinuxChix was hosted at
http://www.linux.org.uk/, who generously donated space for the project.
Linuxchix is currently (since June 2001) hosted by Jenn and Dancer
Thanks to everyone. Your generosity is astounding.
8. Who is running LinuxChix?
LinuxChix was imagined and started by Deb Richardson. She ran it until
June 2001, when she handed it over to Dancer and I (Jenn Vesperman).
We're now running it, with the subsections handed over to various
volunteers. We're incredibly grateful to the volunteers - they protect

The latest version of this FAQ can be found at
http://www.linuxchix.org/content/docs/faqs/technical.html?listname=courses
This FAQ is posted to most LinuxChix mailing lists every month.
1. Subscribing, Unsubscribing and Configuring Your Subscription
1.1. How do I subscribe?
1.2. How do I unsubscribe?
1.3. How do I change my subscription address?
1.4. How do I get my password?
1.5. How do I turn off mail delivery for an address? ('nomail' option)
1.1. How do I subscribe?
There are three common ways:
Go to http://mailman.linuxchix.org/mailman/listinfo/courses and
follow the instructions given there.
Send a mail to courses-request@linuxchix.org with the subject
"subscribe" (or click on this link:
mailto:courses-request@linuxchix.org?subject=unsubscribe)
o By asking a list admin.
If you're having a lot of trouble with subscribing, ask a human.
:) The list admins' addresses are on the bottom of the pages on
the web interface, and they can also be contacted using the
courses-admin@linuxchix.org address.
1.2. How do I unsubscribe?
There are three common ways:
Go to http://mailman.linuxchix.org/mailman/listinfo/courses and
enter your email address in the "Edit Options" box. From there,
you should get a list of information about your subscription,
including an option to unsubscribe.
Send a mail to courses-request@linuxchix.org with the subject
"unsubscribe" (or click on this link:
mailto:courses-request@linuxchix.org?subject=unsubscribe)
o By asking a list admin.
If you're having a lot of trouble with unsubscribing, ask a
human. :) The list admins' addresses are on the bottom of the
pages on the web interface, and they can also be contacted using
the courses-admin@linuxchix.org address.
1.3. How do I change my subscription address?
In mailman 2.0.* there is no way to change an address, so you have to
do this by subscribing the new address and unsubscribing the old
address. (See above for how to do each of these.)
If you may still post occasionally from the old address (eg some of
your mail clients may be configured for the old address), you may
want to leave the old address subscribed and set it 'nomail'. For
more information, see the question "How I turn off mail delivery for
1.4. How do I get my password?
Your passwords are mailed out to you once a month, but if you want it
sooner, go to the listinfo page
http://mailman.linuxchix.org/mailman/listinfo/courses and enter your
email address in the "Edit Options" box at the bottom of the page.
This will bring up a page of information about your subscription, and
you can click on the button marked "Email my password to me"
1.5. How do I turn off mail delivery for an address? ('nomail' option)
o Go to the listinfo page
http://mailman.linuxchix.org/mailman/listinfo/courses and enter
the email address in the "Edit Options" box at the bottom of the
o On this options page, set "Disable mail delivery" to "On", enter
your password in the box at the bottom, and press "Submit my
2. Replying to the Lists
2.1. Why can't I just hit 'Reply' in my mail reader and have my reply go
to the lists? I have to type in the address of the list myself!
2.2. So, if I can't hit 'Reply', how can I reply to the lists?
2.1. Why can't I just hit 'Reply' in my mail reader and have my reply go
to the lists? I have to type in the address of the list myself!
The LinuxChix lists do not have the Reply-To header set to the list
address. Hence when you press Reply, the reply goes to the original
There are many good reasons why LinuxChix lists do not have the
Reply-To set. These reasons are explained in Chip Rosenthal's essay
Reply-To munging considered harmful. If you have an argument that is
not addressed in this essay, bring it up on the lists and the
LinuxChix admins may reconsider their decision.
2.2. So, if I can't hit 'Reply', how can I reply to the lists?
Almost all mail readers have a 'Reply All' or 'Group Reply' option,
which will reply to the original author and Cc the list. Most people
choose to reply this way.
If you wish to reply just to the list, you can either put the list
address in the To field manually, or you can use a mail reader that
has a 'Reply To List' function. Some mailers which have a 'Reply To
List' function are: KMail and mutt. Let us know if you hear of any
3. Problems with the Lists: Missing Mail and Mail Held for Approval
3.1. I'm not getting mail from linuxchix anymore. What's wrong?
3.2. My mail got "held for approval" because it said I wasn't a
subscriber. What do I do?
3.3. I keep making the mistake of sending from the wrong address. Do I
need to subscribe my other address(es)?
3.4. My mail to the linuxchix lists isn't getting through at all!
3.1. I'm not getting mail from linuxchix anymore. What's wrong?
There are a few possibilities:
o No one has sent any mail to the list(s) you're on for a little
To check if this is the case, visit the archives at
http://mailman.linuxchix.org/pipermail/courses/.
o You were bouncing mail and have had mail delivery (temporarily)
disabled by the list software.
If you bounce too many messages, the list software stops trying
to send you mail. To check if this is the case, go to
http://mailman.linuxchix.org/mailman/listinfo/courses, enter
your email address in the box near the bottom where the button
says "Edit Options", and check to make sure that you are set to
be receiving mail. Change it if you're not and your address is
If you didn't know you were bouncing already, you can ask the
list admins for a copy of the bounced message to help you figure
out what went wrong.
o The mailing list is actually down.
Try pinging linuxchix.org to see if the machine is up and your
machine can reach it. If it is, try contacting one of the admins
to find out what's going on.
3.2. My mail got "held for approval" because it said I wasn't a
subscriber. What do I do?
If you want the mail to go through right away, your best option is to
re-send it from the address at which you're subscribed. If you
re-send, don't be surprised if you see a duplicate copy come through
later when a listadmin approves it without noticing that you've
If you're not in a hurry or don't want to or can't re-send, most
legitimate posts will be approved by an admin when she gets them and
has time to deal with them. This usually takes less than a day,
sometimes two, but can take longer if the list admins are busy.
If this happens more than a few times, please see the question below
"Do I need to subscribe my other address(es)?"
3.3. I keep making the mistake of sending from the wrong address. Do I
need to subscribe my other address(es)?
We prefer that you do subscribe any address you use frequently for
posting. This lowers the workload on our volunteers *and* means that
your posts will get through to the lists more quickly. Since you can
subscribe an address without receiving mail to that address, it's
often easier to just subscribe an address than to remember to switch
To do this, subscribe the address (see instructions under "How do I
subscribe?") and then disable mail delivery (see instructions under
"How do I disable mail delivery to an address?").
3.4. My mail to the linuxchix lists isn't getting through at all!
It is possible that there is some error with the machine hosting the
linuxchix.org mailing lists. Check the archives of the list, linked
from http://mailman.linuxchix.org/mailman/listinfo to see if your
post has appeared. Check if there have been other posts to the list
in the last few days. Mail the list admin using the the address made
by placing -admin after the list name (the courses admins' email is
<courses-admin@linuxchix.org>) to ask if there is a problem.
At present, the LinuxChix hosts are using Realtime Blackhole List
filtering on LinuxChix lists. If your mail is originating from a
computer that is a known open relay, then your post to LinuxChix will
bounce. If this is the case, and you are using an ISP account, you
should be using their SMTP server to relay your mail rather than
connecting directly - ask their technical support what the SMTP
server's address is and ask them or us how to set up your mail to go
via their server. If no then you might want to investigate how to be
removed from the RBL. You might want to let us know by asking someone
to forward mail to us.
4.1. Someone suggested I turn off HTML Mail! Why? How?
4.1. Someone suggested I turn off HTML Mail! Why? How?
Short answer: Instructions for turning off HTML mail in many clients
can be found at http://www.expita.com/nomime.html
HTML formatting is used to format your mail in the same way that web
pages can be formatted. It is used by default by many mail readers.
However, there are many many people subscribed to the LinuxChix lists
(and to most other lists). A substantial number of those people do
not like to receive HTML mail on lists.
These groups include:
o Some subscribers who use text-based email clients that can't
display web pages (please note that most common text-based email
clients, including Pine and Mutt, can in fact produce a text
version of HTML mail, if you don't know how to do this with your
client, you might want to ask the <techtalk@linuxchix.org> list
o Subscribers who get the digest version of the lists (they receive
one mail a day containing all the mail to the list that day,
rather than receiving each mail as it is sent to the list). Your
HTML mail is simply bundled in with all the text mails and loses
the headers that allow most mailers to recognise and render your
o Subscribers who have expensive and slow connections. HTML mail is
larger than text mail because of all the extra formatting that
o Our generous server hosts, whose server must send out hundreds of
copies of your large HTML mails (if the HTML adds 500 bytes to
your email, that could mean 100K of extra work for the LinuxChix
server!). Our hosts are volunteers and their bandwidth is not

The latest version of this FAQ can be found at
http://www.linuxchix.org/content/docs/faqs/policy.html
Discussion of this FAQ is welcome on the <issues@linuxchix.org> list.
This FAQ is posted once every month to every public LinuxChix list.
1. Membership Policies
1.1. What are LinuxChix lists for?
1.2. Who are LinuxChix lists for?
1.3. Are men welcome too?
1.4. Is LinuxChix English-only?
2.1. Are there any rules?
2.2. Are there any other policies?
2.3. Why doesn't the reply-to point to the list?
3.1. I found this very interesting article about Free
Software/women/technology/politics that I think everyone
should read and discuss! Can I forward it?
3.2. Can I forward LinuxChix posts to people who are not
subscribed to LinuxChix?
3.3. I notice that many of the lists are privately archived
or have no archives available. Can I put up my own archive?
4. List Complaints and Disputes
4.1. I have a complaint about a message posted to a LinuxChix
list. What should I do?
1. Membership Policies
1.1. What are LinuxChix lists for?
1.2. Who are LinuxChix lists for?
1.3. Are men welcome too?
1.4. Is LinuxChix English-only?
1.1. What are LinuxChix lists for?
LinuxChix lists are designed to be helpful, friendly, female-oriented
lists for women interested in Linux. There are lists for technical
questions, discussion of women and technology, learning about Linux,
1.2. Who are LinuxChix lists for?
LinuxChix lists are lists for women interested in Linux.
1.3. Are men welcome too?
Men are welcome on most LinuxChix lists, provided that they realise
and respect that the lists are primarily intended as lists for women.
At present, there is one exception - the grrls-only@linuxchix.org
mailing list, which is female-only.
1.4. Is LinuxChix English-only?
At present, all LinuxChix posts are in the English language. This is
more due to the coordinators of LinuxChix living in English speaking
countries than anything else.
If anyone wants to volunteer to run LinuxChix lists in other
languages, they might want to ask on some of the lists if there are
many other Chix who would be interested in a list in their language
and if so, join the volunteers@linuxchix.org list and volunteer to
Alternatively, they could start a language-based chapter, and run a
mailing list on a separate server. In this case they should join the
chapters@linuxchix.org list.
2.1. Are there any rules?
2.2. Are there any other policies?
2.3. Why doesn't the reply-to point to the list?
2.1. Are there any rules?
LinuxChix was founded in part due to the aggressiveness of existing
technical lists. If you do tell someone to read the manual, which is
sometimes the most useful answer to a technical question, do it
politely and at least tell them where to find the manual, and invite
them to come back with any questions that the manual doesn't answer
There is no prior knowledge required to post to any LinuxChix
technical list. Questions at any level are equally welcome, and
should be treated as such.
2.2. Are there any other policies?
LinuxChix lists are hosted by volunteers. Please be nice to them and
don't send large mails that will overload their machine. All binary
attachments, and mails over 20Kb in size will be rejected. Post a
link to any information larger than this, or invite people to email
you privately to get you to send them a copy.
All posts to LinuxChix lists should be in plain text, rather than
HTML. Not all LinuxChix can read mail in HTML format. It can also be
very hard on LinuxChix who receive mail in digest form (all messages
for the day bundled into one mail).
2.3. Why doesn't the reply-to point to the list?
There are two articles on the topic of altering a mailing list's
'Reply-To' header so that using the 'reply' option in the mail client
makes mail go just to the list. I recommend that you read both of
them. They are Reply-To Munging Considered Harmful and Reply-To
Munging Considered Useful. I also have a couple of considerations
that aren't explicitly stated in either article.
If I don't change the reply-to, I respect the choice of people who
have explicitly set it in their mail client. If I have a technical
way of telling who has and who hasn't set it in their client, and
only change the ones that haven't set it, then using 'reply' would be
a mix of 'to the sender' and 'to the mailing list', and that would be
Mail clients have been producing a 'reply-to-list' option. This is,
in my opinion, the best technical solution.
Some mailing list software (including Mailman) now includes an option
to avoid mailing a recipient if the recipient is also cc'd in a
message. This minimises duplicate messages, and is a technical
solution for one of the biggest issues.
Discussion of new, additional points on the subject is on-topic for
most LinuxChix lists. Discussion of the existing points in relation
to LinuxChix lists is welcome on the open-topic mailing lists, but
not specific-topic lists. (It's on-topic for technical lists if
you're asking about it for -your- lists.)
A personal note: Please accept that discussing the known points with
me will not make me change my mind about how the LinuxChix lists are
set up. New points might, but not the ones I've already thought
through. Thank you. Jenn.
3.1. I found this very interesting article about Free
Software/women/technology/politics that I think everyone should read and
discuss! Can I forward it?
3.2. Can I forward LinuxChix posts to people who are not subscribed to
3.3. I notice that many of the lists are privately archived or have no
archives available. Can I put up my own archive?
3.1. I found this very interesting article about Free
Software/women/technology/politics that I think everyone should read
and discuss! Can I forward it?
Please do not post material to the lists that was not written by you,
including articles and forwarded material, unless you are certain
that the copyright owner of the material allows redistribution.
Otherwise you are violating the owner's copyright. If you come across
an interesting article that you want to discuss, you should post a
link to the article and a summary of the parts you found interesting.
If it is not available online, the only thing you can do is post a
detailed description of how to find it (author, title,
journal/newspaper/book title, publisher and so on).
3.2. Can I forward LinuxChix posts to people who are not subscribed to
No. Not without the author's permission. Assume you do not have such
permission if you are uncertain.
There are several reasons, both legal and ethical, why this is so.
The copyright of any message sent to LinuxChix lists is owned by the
author of the message, and is only free for redistribution if the
copyright owner specifically allows it. You therefore mustn't forward
LinuxChix messages off the LinuxChix lists without specific
permission from the author. If they didn't give such permission in
the body of their message, you could mail them and ask for it, but
please respect their decision either way.
Members make posts to LinuxChix on the understanding that they will
not be redistributed offlist. Some members make personal posts
trusting in this understanding. LinuxChix has successful mailing
lists that discusses sensitive topics and these can only function
based on this understanding. Members forwarding posts offlist
therefore breach this understanding with the author and with
LinuxChix, hurting both the author of the message and the function of
many of the LinuxChix lists as a whole.
If the message was posted to list publically archived on LinuxChix
(some of the technical lists are publically archived), you could give
other people a link to the archived copy of their post.
Generally, as in all email, when you reply to the mail it is accepted
that you can quote relevant parts of the message you are replying to
in your message. You should keep this to a minimum, mainly for
bandwidth reasons. And everyone is subscribed, so we all saw the
3.3. I notice that many of the lists are privately archived or have no
archives available. Can I put up my own archive?
Absolutely not. Any lists not publically archived are not archived
for a reason. These reasons include letting people have sensitive
personal discussions without making them available for searching and
reading for years to come. You must not archive our lists or
otherwise republish them.
4. List Complaints and Disputes
4.1. I have a complaint about a message posted to a LinuxChix list. What
4.1. I have a complaint about a message posted to a LinuxChix list. What
In general, LinuxChix lists welcome differing opinions. If your
complaint falls within the basic 'be polite, be helpful' guidelines
(which includes being polite and helpful to the author), by all
means, discuss your problem on any list for which it is on-topic.
As a guideline, politely arguing with a post is fine, attacking the
poster themself is not.
Any problems you have with any material posted to the LinuxChix that
can't be addressed in a polite and helpful way on-list, for example
because it concerns issues you would rather not discuss on list, or
because personal attacks, privacy issues, third parties, or legal
issues such as defamation are involved should be raised with the list
administrators or the LinuxChix coordinator. The list administrators
can be contacted at LISTNAME-admin@linuxchix.org. The co-ordinator is
currently Jenn Vesperman, who can be reached at <jenn@linuxchix.org>.

1.8. How do I get my password?
1.9. Someone suggested I turn off HTML Mail! Why? How?
The latest version of this FAQ can be found at http://www.linuxchix.org/content
/docs/faqs/technical.html?listname=courses

Among the nice new things in Mailman 2.1 is support for topics, and I've
just set this list up to use them.
There are two important things you should know about the topics:
1. You can be subscribed to all or only some of the topics.
2. To make sure your post goes with the right topic, simply put the tag for
that topic into your Subject: line. (Yes, this is exactly what we do
already, just now there's even more reason to do it.)
SUBSCRIBING TO TOPICS
=====================
If you go to your list options page
(http://mailman.linuxchix.org/mailman/options/courses/EMAILADDRESS) you
can see the 5 courses which are running currently:
* C programming course (Uses header [C])
* LaTeX document-markup course (Uses header [LaTeX])
* Python programming course (Uses header [Python])
* Perl programming course (Uses header [Perl])
* Networking course (Uses header [Networking])
If you are only interested in some of these courses, you can choose them
Posts which don't match one of these topic filters are in a separate
category. In the section marked "Do you want to receive message that do not
match any topic filter?", you can choose whether you want to receive them.
To send a message related to a given course topic, just do as we have been
doing all along: put the appropriate tag into the Subject: line. (eg: [C]
for the C course, [Networking] for the networking course). These tags do
not seem to be case sensitive, so as long as you spell the word right, you
Please note: As far as I can tell, Mailman can't handle things being on more
than one topic at once, so if you have two tags in your subject line, only
one will be used to define the topic of that message. The rules are checked
in order, so topics higher in the list I just gave will be matched first.
Basically, just don't put more than one tag in your Subject: line and it'll
make life that much easier.
Unfortunately, I haven't spotted any documentation for topic filtering other
than the stuff built in to the mailman web interface. I'm currently
involved in writing the Mailman 2.1 documentation, though, so feel free to
ask me. If I don't know the answer to your question, I'm probably going to
have to learn it eventually, and this way I'll know that that information
needs to go into the documentation.

LinuxChix: List Policy FAQ
Revision 1.0 January 29 2002
----------------------------------------------------------------------
1.1. What are LinuxChix lists for?
1.2. Who are LinuxChix lists for?
1.3. Are men welcome too?
1.4. Are there any rules?
1.5. Are there any other policies?
\rThe latest version of this FAQ can be found at
http://www.linuxchix.org/content/docs/faqs/policy.html
\rDiscussion of this FAQ is welcome on the <issues@linuxchix.org> list.
1.1. What are LinuxChix lists for?
LinuxChix lists are designed to be helpful, friendly, female-oriented
lists for women interested in Linux. There are lists for technical
questions, discussion of women and technology, learning about Linux, and
1.2. Who are LinuxChix lists for?
LinuxChix lists are lists for women interested in Linux.
1.3. Are men welcome too?
Men are welcome on most LinuxChix lists, provided that they realise and
respect that the lists are primarily intended as lists for women.
At present, there is one exception - the grrls-only@linuxchix.org mailing
list, which is female-only.
1.4. Are there any rules?
LinuxChix was founded in part due to the aggressiveness of existing
technical lists. If you do tell someone to read the manual, which is
sometimes the most useful answer to a technical question, do it politely
and at least tell them where to find the manual, and invite them to come
back with any questions that the manual doesn't answer for them.
There is no prior knowledge required to post to any LinuxChix technical
list. Questions at any level are equally welcome, and should be treated as
1.5. Are there any other policies?
It is strongly recommended that all subscribers to any LinuxChix list also
subscribe to the announce@linuxchix.org mailing list. It is very low
traffic and all messages relevant to the entire community will be posted
If anyone has a message for the entire community, such as changes to
LinuxChix as a whole, or announcements of new lists or chapters, they are
asked to post them to announce@linuxchix.org and not crosspost them to any
LinuxChix lists are hosted by volunteers. Please be nice to them and don't
send large mails that will overload their machine. All binary attachments,
and mails over 20Kb in size will be rejected. Post a link to any
information larger than this, or invite people to email you privately to
get you to send them a copy.
All posts to LinuxChix lists should be in plain text, rather than HTML.
Not all LinuxChix can read mail in HTML format. It can also be very hard
on LinuxChix who receive mail in digest form (all messages for the day
bundled into one mail).

LinuxChix: List Technical FAQ
Revision 1.0 March 2002
----------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Mailing lists: Technical questions
1.1. How do I unsubscribe?
1.2. I'm not getting mail from linuxchix anymore. What's
1.3. My mail got "held for approval" because it said I wasn't
a subscriber. What do I do?
1.4. My mail to the linuxchix lists isn't getting through at
1.5. I keep making the mistake of sending from the wrong
address. Do I need to subscribe it?
1.6. How do I get my password?
1. Mailing lists: Technical questions
1.1. How do I unsubscribe?
There are three common ways:
Go to http://mailman.linuxchix.org/mailman/listinfo/courses and enter
your email address in the "Edit Options" box. From there, you should
get a list of information about your subscription, including an option
Send a mail to courses-request@linuxchix.org with the subject
"unsubscribe" (or click on this link:
mailto:courses-request@linuxchix.org?subject=unsubscribe)
* By asking a list admin.
If you're having a lot of trouble with unsubscribing, ask a human. :)
The list admins' addresses are on the bottom of the pages on the web
interface, and they can also be contacted using the
courses-admin@linuxchix.org address.
1.2. I'm not getting mail from linuxchix anymore. What's wrong?
There are a few possibilities:
* No one has sent any mail to the list(s) you're on for a little while.
To check if this is the case, visit the archives at
http://mailman.linuxchix.org/pipermail/courses/.
* You were bouncing mail and have had mail delivery (temporarily)
disabled by the list software.
If you bounce too many messages, the list software stops trying to
send you mail. To check if this is the case, go to
http://mailman.linuxchix.org/mailman/listinfo/courses, enter your
email address in the box near the bottom where the button says "Edit
Options", and check to make sure that you are set to be receiving
mail. Change it if you're not and your address is working again.
If you didn't know you were bouncing already, you can ask for a copy
of the bounced message to help you figure out what went wrong.
* The mailing list is actually down.
Try pinging linuxchix.org to see if the machine is up and your machine
can reach it. If it is, try contacting one of the admins to find out
1.3. My mail got "held for approval" because it said I wasn't a
subscriber. What do I do?
If you want the mail to go through right away, your best option is to
resend it from the address at which you're subscribed. If you resend,
don't be surprised if you see a duplicate copy come through later when a
listadmin approves it without noticing that you've resent.
If you're not in a hurry or don't want to or can't resend, most legitimate
posts will be approved by an admin when she gets them and has time to deal
with them. This usually takes less than a day, sometimes two.
1.4. My mail to the linuxchix lists isn't getting through at all!
It is possible that there is some error with the machine hosting the
linuxchix.org mailing lists. Check the archives of the list, linked from
http://mailman.linuxchix.org/mailman/listinfo to see if your post has
appeared. Check if there have been other posts to the list in the last few
days. Mail the list admins, simply place -admin after the list name (the
courses admins' email is <courses-admin@linuxchix.org>)to ask if there
At present, the LinuxChix hosts are using Realtime Blackhole List
filtering on LinuxChix lists. If your mail is originating from a computer
that is a known open relay, then your post to LinuxChix will bounce. If
this is the case, and you are using an ISP account, you should be using
their SMTP server to relay your mail rather than connecting directly - ask
their technical support what the SMTP server's address is and ask them or
us how to set up your mail to go via their server. If not then you might
want to investigate how to be removed from the RBL. You might want to let
us know by asking someone to forward mail to us.
1.5. I keep making the mistake of sending from the wrong address. Do I
need to subscribe it?
We prefer that you do subscribe any address you use frequently for
posting. Since you can subscribe an address without receiving mail to that
address, it's often easier to just subscribe an address than to remember
to switch your From: line!
Subscribing without receving mail ("nomail" option)
* Subscribe the address from which you want to send mail.
* Go to the listinfo page
http://mailman.linuxchix.org/mailman/listinfo/courses and enter the
email address in the "Edit Options" box at the bottom of the page.
* On this options page, set "Disable mail delivery" to "On", enter your
password in the box at the bottom, and press "Submit my Changes"
Voila! Now you can send mail from your address without having it held for
1.6. How do I get my password?
Your passwords are mailed out to you once a month, but if you want it
sooner, go to the listinfo page
http://mailman.linuxchix.org/mailman/listinfo/courses and enter your
email address in the "Edit Options" box at the bottom of the page. This
will bring up a page of information about your subscription, and you can
click on the button marked "Email my password to me"

1.6. Are there any other policies?
The latest version of this FAQ can be found at http://www.linuxchix.org/content
/docs/faqs/policy.html
Discussion of this FAQ is welcome on the <issues@linuxchix.org> list.
In the same way, the copyright of any message sent to LinuxChix lists is owned
by the author of the message, and is only free for redistribution if the
copyright owner specifically allows it. You therefore shouldn't forward
LinuxChix messages off the LinuxChix without specific permission from the
Generally, as in all email, it is accepted that you can quote relevant parts of
the message you are replying to in your message. You should keep this to a
minimum, mainly for bandwidth reasons. And everyone is subscribed, so we all
saw the previous message.
1.6. Are there any other policies?
It is strongly recommended that all subscribers to any LinuxChix list also
subscribe to the announce@linuxchix.org mailing list. It is very low traffic
