"The protein encoded by this gene is a cytokine receptor that
99 specifically mediates the biological effects of interleukin 9 (IL9). The
100 functional IL9 receptor complex requires this protein as well as the
101 interleukin 2 receptor, gamma (IL2RG), a common gamma subunit shared by the
102 receptors of many different cytokines. The ligand binding of this receptor
103 leads to the activation of various JAK kinases and STAT proteins, which
104 connect to different biologic responses. This gene is located at the
105 pseudoautosomal regions of X and Y chromosomes. Genetic studies suggested an
106 association of this gene with the development of asthma. Multiple pseudogenes
107 on chromosome 9, 10, 16, and 18 have been described. Alternatively spliced

4322 clusters have an immunoglobulin-like organization, suggesting that a novel
4323 mechanism may be involved in their regulation and expression. The gamma gene
4324 cluster includes 22 genes divided into 3 subfamilies. Subfamily A contains 12
4325 genes, subfamily B contains 7 genes and 2 pseudogenes, and the more distantly
4326 related subfamily C contains 3 genes. The tandem array of 22 large, variable
4327 region exons are followed by a constant region, containing 3 exons shared by
4328 all genes in the cluster. Each variable region exon encodes the extracellular
4329 region, which includes 6 cadherin ectodomains and a transmembrane region. The
4330 constant region exons encode the common cytoplasmic region. These neural
4331 cadherin-like cell adhesion proteins most likely play a critical role in the
4332 establishment and function of specific cell-cell connections in the brain.
