7 This is a security release in order to address
8 CVE-2013-4475 (ACLs are not checked on opening an alternate
9 data stream on a file or directory) and
10 CVE-2013-4476 (Private key in key.pem world readable).
12 o CVE-2013-4475:
13 Samba versions 3.2.0 and above (all versions of 3.2.x, 3.3.x,
14 3.4.x, 3.5.x, 3.6.x, 4.0.x and 4.1.x) do not check the underlying
15 file or directory ACL when opening an alternate data stream.
17 According to the SMB1 and SMB2+ protocols the ACL on an underlying
18 file or directory should control what access is allowed to alternate
19 data streams that are associated with the file or directory.
21 By default no version of Samba supports alternate data streams
22 on files or directories.
24 Samba can be configured to support alternate data streams by loading
25 either one of two virtual file system modues (VFS) vfs_streams_depot or
26 vfs_streams_xattr supplied with Samba, so this bug only affects Samba
27 servers configured this way.
29 To determine if your server is vulnerable, check for the strings
30 "streams_depot" or "streams_xattr" inside your smb.conf configuration
31 file.
33 o CVE-2013-4476:
34 In setups which provide ldap(s) and/or https services, the private
35 key for SSL/TLS encryption might be world readable. This typically
36 happens in active directory domain controller setups.

1137 Samba 4.0 supports the server-side of the Active Directory logon
1138 environment used by Windows 2000 and later, so we can do full domain
1139 join and domain logon operations with these clients.
1141 Our Domain Controller (DC) implementation includes our own built-in
1142 LDAP server and Kerberos Key Distribution Center (KDC) as well as the
1143 Samba3-like logon services provided over CIFS. We correctly generate
1144 the infamous Kerberos PAC, and include it with the Kerberos tickets we
1145 issue.
1147 When running an AD DC, you only need to run 'samba' (not smbd/nmbd/winbindd),
1148 as the required services are co-coordinated by this master binary.

1159 Samba 4.0.0 ships with two distinct file servers. We now use the
1160 file server from the Samba 3.x series 'smbd' for all file serving by
1161 default.
1163 Samba 4.0 also ships with the 'NTVFS' file server. This file server
1164 is what was used prior to the beta2 release of Samba 4.0, and is
1165 tuned to match the requirements of an AD domain controller. We
1166 continue to support this, not only to provide continuity to
1167 installations that have deployed it as part of an AD DC, but also as a
1168 running example of the NT-FSA architecture we expect to move smbd to in
1169 the longer term.
1171 For pure file server work, the binaries users would expect from that
1172 series (smbd, nmbd, winbindd, smbpasswd) continue to be available.
1175 Domain Member Support
1176 =====================
1178 Domain member support in the 'samba' binary is in its infancy, and
1179 is not comparable to the support found in 'winbindd'. As such, on
1180 Samba domain member servers, the binaries 'smbd', 'nmbd' and 'winbindd'
1181 are to be used, as known from Samba 3 domain member server setups.
1182 The only exceptions from this rule are the cases which explicitly
1183 require the 'samba' binary, namely running the ntvfs file server,
1184 the CIFS proxy or OpenChange on a domain member.
1187 DNS
1188 ===
1190 As DNS is an integral part of Active Directory, we also provide two DNS
1191 solutions, a simple internal DNS server for 'out of the box' configurations
1192 and a more elaborate BIND plugin using the BIND DLZ mechanism in versions
1193 9.8 and 9.9. During the provision, you can select which backend to use.
1194 With the internal backend, your DNS server is good to go.
1195 If you chose the BIND_DLZ backend, a configuration file will be generated
1196 for bind to make it use this plugin, as well as a file explaining how to
1197 set up bind.

1203 To provide accurate timestamps to Windows clients, we integrate with
1204 the NTP project to provide secured NTP replies. To use you need to

1209 Python Scripting Interface

1212 A new scripting interface has been added to Samba 4, allowing
1213 Python programs to interface to Samba's internals, and many tools and
1214 internal workings of the DC code is now implemented in python.
1217 Known Issues
1218 ============
1220 - Replication of DNS data from one AD server to another may not work.
1221 The DNS data used by the internal DNS server and bind9_dlz is stored
1222 in an application partition in our directory. The replication of
1223 this partition is not yet reliable.
1225 - Replication may fail on FreeBSD due to getaddrinfo() rejecting names
1226 containing _. A workaround will be in a future release.
1228 - samba_upgradeprovision should not be run when upgrading to this release
1229 from a recent release. No important database format changes have
1230 been made since alpha16.
1232 - Installation on systems without a system iconv (and developer
1233 headers at compile time) is known to cause errors when dealing with
1234 non-ASCII characters.
1236 - There is no NetBIOS browsing support (network neighbourhood)
1237 available for the AD domain controller. (Support in nmbd and smbd
1238 for classic domains and member/standalone servers is unchanged).
1240 - Clock Synchronisation is critical. Many 'wrong password' errors are
1241 actually due to Kerberos objecting to a clock skew between client
1242 and server. (The NTP work in the previous alphas are partly to assist
1243 with this problem).
1245 - The DRS replication code may fail. Please contact the team if you
1246 experience issues with DRS replication, as we have fixed many issues
1247 here in response to feedback from our production users.
1249 - Linux inotify will now only be supported on systems where glibc also supports
1250 it (for details, please refer to bug #8850).
1253 Upgrading

1256 Users upgrading from Samba 3.x domain controllers and wanting to use
1257 Samba 4.0 as an AD DC should use the 'samba-tool domain
1258 classicupgrade' command. See the wiki for more details:
