  13 Richard M. Stallman, frequently known as RMS,
  14 has been a driving force in the free software
  15 movement for decades, with contributions including
  16 the GNU operating system and Emacs.

  18 Recently, there have been vile online attacks
  19 looking to remove him from the FSF board of directors
  20 for expressing his personal opinions. We have watched
  21 this happen before in an organized fashion with other
  22 prominent free software activists and programmers.
  23 We will not stand idly this time, when an icon
  24 of this community is attacked.

  26 FSF is an autonomous body that is capable of treating
  27 its members in a fair, unbiased fashion, and should not
  28 give in to external social pressures. We urge the
  29 FSF to consider the arguments against RMS objectively
  30 and to truly understand the meaning of his words and actions.

  32 Historically, RMS has been expressing his views in ways
  33 that upset many people. He is usually more focused on the
  34 philosophical underpinnings, and pursuing the objective
  35 truth and linguistic purism, while underemphasising people's
  36 feelings on matters he's commenting on. This makes his arguments
  37 vulnerable to misunderstanding and misrepresentation, something
  38 which we feel is happening in the open letter calling for his removal.
  39 His words need to be interpreted in this context and
  40 taking into account that more often than not,
  41 he is not looking to put things diplomatically.

  43 Regardless, Stallman's opinions on the matters
  44 he is being persecuted over are not relevant to
  45 his ability to lead a community such as the FSF.
  46 Furthermore, he is entitled to his opinions just
  47 as much as anyone else. Members and supporters do not
  48 have to agree with his opinions, but should respect
  49 his right to freedom of thought and speech.

  53 Removing RMS will hurt FSF's image and will deal
  54 a significant blow to the momentum of the free software movement.
  55 We urge you to consider your actions carefully,
  56 as what you will decide will have a serious impact
  57 on the future of the software industry.

  60 **To the ambush mob who is ganging up on Richard Stallman over
  61 reasonable arguments in debate and various opinions and beliefs
  62 voiced over decades as a public figure:**

  64 You have no part in choosing the leadership of any communities.
  65 Especially not via another mob attack which does not remotely
  66 resemble a fairly conducted debate as exemplified
  67 by better people such as Richard Stallman.
