This branch is my playground.  The idea is to try out more significant
changes for longer periods of time.  While most of the patches are by me,
they don't need to be exclusively mine.
 
While I try to keep the changes distro agnostic, I use the binaries nightly
produces on top of OI Hipster and so some distro specific changes may sneak
in.  YMMV.

(1) When possible, use static inlines over macros.  You get the benefits of
    type checking and you don't have to worry about the arguments getting
    evaluated more than once.
