commiting to the trunk (thanks Laurie) ...
NMM optimized on IBM xlf 11 generated errors, unoptimized was OK
initial proble was due to compiler issues with PGI and gfortran
1) variables in the argument list are ifedf'ed for EM_CORE==1
2) declarations of those same variables use the same ifdef
