Properly revert the Core hacks I did for 3.12 compat
Summary: In 23937584effc2dc68aaf94b2163a5272543a6c12, I deleted /
modified / commented out a bunch of stuff in order to make Core
compatible with 3.12. In 9ab007f50bb0f7635c0f0c09116e668d49fa852e, I
attempted to revert them (since we no longer needed that backwards
compatibility). However, while I un-commented-out code, I forgot to put
back a bunch of stuff that I had deleted.
