7New Resizing functionality
8--------------------------
9
10You can now use the mouse wheel and modifier keys to resize windows.
11MOD+Wheel will resize windows vertically and CTRL+Wheel will resize
12windows horizontally. MOD+CTRL+Wheel will resize both at the same time.
13The resize step, or increment can be set in WPrefs in the "Window Handling"
14page, or in the config file with "ResizeIncrement". If this intrudes into
15a specific application's functionality, you can disable it on an application-
16by-application basis by setting the "Do not bind mouse clicks" attribute in
17"Advanced Options".
18
19New Maximize functionality
20--------------------------
21
22Maximus/Maximumize. A new tiled maximization, configured with a keyboard
23shortcut. Using it will maximize the window to the greatest area such that it
24will not overlap any other window of the same workspace. This can be configured
25in WPrefs in the "Keyboard Shortcuts" page, or in the config file with
26"MaximusKey".
27
28Left/right maximization. Now wmaker supports maximizing a window to the
29left or right half of the screen, making it occupy 50% of the area. This is
30useful on widescreen displays where you want to bring up two windows side-by-
31side. The shortcut keys for this can be configured in WPrefs in the "Keyboard
32Shortcuts" page, or in the config file with "LHMaximizeKey" and "RHMaximizeKey"

35------------------------------------------
36
37The "Run..." dialog now autocompletes executables in your path (triggered by
38the TAB key) and records the history of past commands (last 500 by default).
39It can also complete folder names if you start the complete with a "/"
40To use it replace %a with %A in the "Run..." entry in your WMRootMenu file.
41See commit 05720d97076ffc1569e5 for more details.
42
43Automatic menu generator (wmgenmenu)
44-----------------------------------
45
46There is now a new utility to generate the Window Maker menu automatically,
47called wmgenmenu. It searches from a list of pre-defined applications the
48ones which exist in your $PATH and adds them to the corresponding submenus
49("Internet", "Terminals", "Editors" etc) of your WM menu. It also supports
50localization (currently English and German). You can use it like:
51
52$ wmgenmenu > WMRootMenu-new
53$ cp WMRootMenu-new $HOME/GNUstep/Defaults/WMRootMenu
54
55and WM will automatically detect the new menu file and use it without
56restarting wmaker (made possible by the 'inotify' mechanism)

Carlos R. Mafra2010-03-15 10:15:50 +010061Window Maker now uses the 'inotify' mechanism from the linux kernel
62to automatically detect changes in the WMRootMenu file. So the
63--no-polling option is now gone and Window Maker does not wake up
64your CPU unnecessarily (0 wakeups when idle, instead of 4).
65So if you edit the WMRootMenu file by hand (or by using 'wmgenmenu'),
66there is no need to restart wmaker for the changes to take effect.

69-------------------
70
71In addition to applications with only Withdrawn windows, Window Maker
72will now treat any application with its WM_CLASS res_class set as
73"DockApp". This provides an easy workaround for toolkits like gtk+ that
74do not allow creation of windows with the initial_state member of
75XWMHints set to WithdrawnState.

80GNUstep Installation Directory
81------------------------------
82
83WPrefs is now installed in /usr/local/bin and /usr/local/share by default.
84If you use GNUstep and want it to install in /usr/GNUstep/Applications,
85you may specify --with-gnustepdir=/usr/GNUstep
86If the GNUSTEP_LOCAL_ROOT environment variable is defined when configure is
87executed, it will be used (and you don't need to use --with-gnustepdir)
88
24e349af dan2005-03-11 23:05:43 +000089Cached Pixmaps Directory
90------------------------
91
92The directory where Window Maker stores the cached application pixmaps for
93its later use has changed from ~/GNUstep/.AppInfo/WindowMaker to
94~/GNUstep/Library/WindowMaker/CachedPixmaps for better compatibility with
95the GNUstep path structure.
96Also WPrefs now stores internal data in ~/GNUstep/Library/WindowMaker/WPrefs
97(it was ~/GNUstep/.AppInfo/WPrefs before)

b655a5fa dan2005-07-03 18:01:46 +000099X Input Methods support in WINGs
100--------------------------------
101
102Preliminary support for X Input Methods was added to textfield and text
103widgets in WINGs. Input for text in other languages than English should
104work now (except for kanji which will most likely not work, even though
105it wasn't tested).

120Alt-Tab Window Switching
121------------------------
122
123You can change the appearance of the panel shown during Alt-Tab window switching
124with the SwitchPanelImages option:
125
126 (selected_icon_tile_image, background_image, width, height)
127
128selected_icon_tile_image is the image used to highlight the currently selected
129window icon. It must be 64x64 pixels.
130
131background_image is the image used in the background of the panel. It must
132be at least 64x80.
133
134width and height are the width and size of the central part of the image.
135When drawing the panel, the image will be split as:
136 |W |
137 +--+--+--+
138 | | | |
139 +--+--+--+ -
140 | | | | H
141 +--+--+--+ -
142 | | | |
143 +--+--+--+
144
145The 4 corner images will be copied in their original sizes and the rest will
146be scaled to the final panel size.
147
148background_image, width and height are optional. If you leave them out,
149a gray panel will be used. If your machine is not very fast, you may want
150to use it.

156NetWM / EWMH Support
157--------------------
158
159Support for the EWMH standard has been added. Applications from GNOME 2.x and
160KDE 3.x should now interoperate better with Window Maker.
161
162Support for the obsolete/legacy GNOME 1.x, KDE 1.x and OpenLook(!) hints was
163wiped out for the sake of sanity.

166Antialiased font support
167------------------------
168
1e3a4037 kojima2004-10-18 01:37:17 +0000169With the addition of Xft2 support in the WINGs library, now
170Window Maker can display antialiased text with TrueType or any scalable fonts.
74ba4f8e dan2003-08-07 00:26:21 +0000171
1e3a4037 kojima2004-10-18 01:37:17 +0000172You can pick fonts for Window Maker in the Font configuration section of
173WPrefs.
83d3625e dan2002-11-30 02:13:36 +0000174
1e3a4037 kojima2004-10-18 01:37:17 +0000175Antialiased text is enabled by default, but can be disabled by adding
51c2edf8 dan2004-10-23 02:26:13 +0000176
1e3a4037 kojima2004-10-18 01:37:17 +0000177AntialiasedText = NO; in ~/GNUstep/Defaults/WMGLOBAL
51c2edf8 dan2004-10-23 02:26:13 +0000178
179This will disable antialiased text for any WINGs based application. If you
180only want to disable them for a specific application only, like WindowMaker
181for example, then add the same option in the applications configuration file,
182in this case ~/GNUstep/Defaults/WindowMaker
183For WindowMaker, this can also be achieved from the Expert panel in WPrefs.
184
1e3a4037 kojima2004-10-18 01:37:17 +0000185Note that bitmapped fonts look much better than TrueType when antialiasing is
186disabled.

2cf59318 kojima2003-06-06 02:51:47 +0000188Global Submenus
189---------------
190
191Global menus allow for system wide menus that are added to every users
192application menus. They are located in /usr/etc/WindowMaker/,
193/usr/local/etc/WindowMaker or whatever is your sysconf directory
194for WindowMaker. There are 2 files:
195
196GlobalMenu.pre, which is added to the beginning of the menu and
197GlobalMenu.post, which is added to the end of the menu.
198
199These are to be proplist format menus, for example:
200
201(("Foobar", EXEC, foobar),
202 ("Blabla", EXEC, blabla))
203
204or, in case you want a submenu:
205
206(("Submenu",
207 ("Foobar", EXEC, foobar),
208 ("Blabla", EXEC, blabla)))
209
210
1e3a4037 kojima2004-10-18 01:37:17 +0000211UTF-8 Support
212-------------
213
214Window Maker now uses UTF-8 internally (and thus can display UTF-8 text
215in window titles and other places). Menus and po files must now be
216encoded in UTF-8. If your menus contain non ASCII characters, you can convert
217them to UTF-8 with the following command:
218
219iconv -f <current-file-encoding> -t utf-8 <filename> > <filename>.utf8
220
221For example:
222
223iconv -f iso-8859-1 -t utf-8 menu > menu.utf
224mv menu.utf menu
225
226
227Icon Panel for Alt-Tabbing
228--------------------------
229
230A panel with icons for the windows that you can switch to will appear
231when you press Alt-Tab. You can navigate through the windows with Alt-Tab
232(Alt-Shift-Tab) or with the left/right keys once the panel is shown.

238Shading/Unshading windows using mouse wheel on their titlebar
60409e29 dan2001-12-22 21:18:15 +0000239-------------------------------------------------------------
75f79016 dan2001-10-09 03:35:45 +0000240
241In addition to the known methods of shading/unshading a window, one can now
242do this by using the mouse wheel on the window's titlebar. The mouse events
243are interpreted via a mapping in the global WINGs configuration file,
244WMGLOBAL, by the MouseWheelUp and MouseWheelDown directives which will do
245shading and unshading respectfully.
246
247However, to avoid unwanted triggers of shading/unshading the window, two
248consecutive mouse wheel events in the same direction are required. The
249trigger won't occur if the events are separated by more than a double-click's
250worth of time, which is technically speaking like making a double-click with
251the button that corresponds to the mouse wheel direction.
252
253Practically speaking, this means that you have to move the mouse wheel up
254or down quickly, like when you want to quickly scroll over something big.
255
256
99a5f0da dan2001-12-21 21:39:52 +0000257Shared application icons
258------------------------
259
260Real application icon sharing was implemented in place of the collapse
261appicon thing. With this applications of the same instance.class will
262have a single shared application icon and hiding will hide all windows
263of the aplications attached to that appicon as if there is a single
264application. This feature is enabled by default for all applications in
265the global WMWindowAttributes defaults domain using:
266
267"*" = {SharedAppIcon = Yes;};
268
269If you're not satisfied with this or want the old behaviour back you
270can revert this (either in the global domain for all users or in your
271personal WMWindowAttibutes domain) using SharedAppIcon = No; for "*"
272It can also be enabled/disabled for individual applications as needed.
273
274Setting this option can be done using the window's inspector panel in the
275"Application Specific" section. You can set/unset it for all applications by
276using the "Defaults for all windows" in the "Window Specification" section
277
278Basically using this can have 2 major scenarios:
2791. Leave it on by default, but disable it for the few specific
280 applications that do not behave well with it. (default)
2812. Leave it off by default, and enable it for all applications for
282 which you want it enabled.
283
284At this point all applications we tested work ok, some of them even
285work better with this feature turned on: for example xmms and Corel's
286WorkPerfect8 now only have 1 appicon (they used to have 2 without this
287feature).
288
289This feature is turned off by default for the following applications
290because it's incompatible with them:
2911. all GNUstep applications
2922. applications with an application menu (wterm, Aileron, etc)
beb83f52 dan2001-12-21 23:30:39 +00002933. all applications with withdrawn windows only (this means all dockapps)
99a5f0da dan2001-12-21 21:39:52 +0000294
295As a side note: wterm can use the shared appicon feature as long as it
296doesn't use the appmenu (will do this by default). If you start it
297using the appmenu (wterm -wm) it will disable the shared appicon
298feature because apps with appmenus are incompatible with this feature.
299
300If an application is a GNUstep application or if it has an appmenu, it's
301detected automatically and the shared appicon is disabled automatically
302without any user intervention or need to configure anything.
303
304
305Dock/Clip stealing appicons
306---------------------------
307
308This feature is different form the Clip's "Autoattract Icons" feature
309as it won't attach any new icon to the dock/clip.
310What it does, is when you start an application by other means than
311dock/clip, like for example using the main menu or a terminal, it will
312search the dock/clips for the presence of an appicon for that
313application, that is not already running at that moment and will attach
314the started application to that appicon in the dock/clip if available,
315making it look like the dock/clip just stole the appicon for the started
316application. There is an animation for this to offer visual feedback
317that this happened.

378
3bde6495 dan2001-04-27 23:41:17 +0000379New options to configure the workspace mouse actions
380----------------------------------------------------
381
382The following options were removed from the WindowMaker defaults configuration
383file:
384
385SelectWindowsMouseButton, WindowListMouseButton and ApplicationMenuMouseButton.
386
387They were replaced with the following 3+1:
388
389MouseLeftButtonAction, MouseMiddleButtonAction and MouseRightButtonAction plus
390MouseWheelAction
391
392In the old way because all gravitated around the workspace actions to which
393specific mouse buttons could have been bound, it allowed one to specify in
394the configuration file settings which would have led to weird situations
395that also had undesirable results.
396For example the same mouse button (for example left) could have been
397assigned to all workspace actions: 'select windows', 'show window list menu'
398and 'show applications menu' which of course were not only impossible to
399accomplish while still having a properly working workspace, but they also
400allowed one to specify some settings in the configuration file that were
401never in fact translatable to proper workspace actions.
402
403To void this kind of user interface inconsistency, the new options now
404gravitate around the physical device (the mouse and its buttons) to which
405specific workspace actions can be bound. This way, even if one assigns the
406same action to all mouse buttons, that situation while gives redundant and
407unpractical settings it will still translatable to proper workspace actions:
408all buttons will execute the same action, but a button will execute only one
409action at a time.
410
411The new options take the following values:
412all Mouse...ButtonAction can have one of the following values:
413
414None, SelectWindows, OpenApplicationsMenu or OpenWindowListMenu
415
416MouseWheelAction can be one of None or SwitchWorkspaces
417
418If you had the default actions bound to mouse buttons before, then it will
419work for you without any intervention in the configuration files.
420Else you need to use WPrefs.app to bind the actions to the mouse buttons
421again to your old settings. Also if you want to change the mouse wheel
422behavior regarding workspaces you can now (use WPrefs.app to do this).
423
e826a412 dan2001-04-29 21:21:39 +0000424Client supplied icons
425---------------------
426
3301b57d kojima2005-03-11 01:56:06 +0000427Window Maker saves the client supplied icons in
428~/GNUstep/Library/WindowMaker/CachedPixmaps in XPM format for later use
429when the app is no longer running (to have the image to display for docked
430icons for example).
e826a412 dan2001-04-29 21:21:39 +0000431
432Until recently the XPM images saved by Window Maker were incorrect, but a
433recent fix in the code to save XPM's fixed them. But with this fix, all
434previously saved XPM's in that directory are no longer readable (they give
435wrong images on screen or fail to load).
436
437To avoid the need for the user to fix this by hand editing WMWindowAttributes
3301b57d kojima2005-03-11 01:56:06 +0000438and removing all references to icons in ~/GNUstep/Library/WindowMaker/CachedPixmaps
439which can be annoying, new code was added to Window Maker to permit the

cf997512 dan2001-05-10 22:45:27 +0000449Hermes library support
450----------------------
451
452If configure finds hermes library (an optimized pixel format conversion
453library) installed it will use it to do the pixel format conversion in
454the wraster library for some cases (TrueColor visuals without dithering).
455Currently the hermes routines cannot convert to an indexed destination,
456so we can't use hermes for PseudoColor, GrayScale and StaticGray visuals.
457Also hermes only does dithering for just 2 combinations of source/destination
458bits/masks none of them useful to out needs so for dithering we still
459use out routines.
460
461The Hermes library is completely optional, you can build Window Maker
462without having it, it just speeds up the things a little for some
463situations.
464
465hermes library is available here: http://www.clanlib.org/hermes/

472
473Running Window Maker with one of -nopolling or --no-polling command line

476

507----------------
508
5092 options (WorkspaceBorder and WorkspaceBorderSize) were added to allow one to
510set a small (0..5 pixels) border for the workspace. This border will not be
511covered by windows when maximizing, allowing one to easily access the clip
512or map a menu using the mouse in the border area, even when there are
513windows maximized in both horizontal and vertical directions.
514WorkspaceBorder can be one of (None, LeftRight, TopBottom, AllDirections)
515while WorkspaceBorderSize is the size in pixles of the border not to be
516covered by windows when maximizing (usually a small amount 0..5 pixles).
517
518Both options can be set using WPrefs.app in the "Miscelaneous Ergonomic
519Preferences" section. WPrefs will always limit WorkspaceBorderSize in the
520(0..5) range.
521
522Note that if "full screen maximization" option is set for a window, that
523window will ignore this border area, maximizing to full screen.

d6566ff6 dan1999-10-13 21:22:37 +0000552Removed "Keep Attracted Icons" option from Clip's menu
553------------------------------------------------------
554
555Since this option brought more confusion than usefulness among users, and
556since it was usable only in a very limited context, being able to fill up
557the Clip very easily, it was removed.
558An alternative way of gaining the same functionality is to use the "Keep icon"
559entry in the Clip's main menu. Or select multiple icons before calling that
560entry, to make it apply to more than one icon.
561
562Note: "Keep icon", as the obsoleted "Keep Attracted Icons" had nothing to do
563 with holding icons in Clip, while the application is running. Once they
564 are attracted, they are kept until the application close. Using
565 "Keep icon", will only assure that the icon will be kept, even after the
566 application is closed.
567
568Please don't ask for this option back. It's error prone, and very unintuitive.
569Considering it's very restrictive usability, and it's very ambiguous topic, it
570does not need a special entry in the Clip's menu, taking in count that there
571are already better alternative ways of gaining the same functionality.

702Added ability to set icons docked in Clip to be omnipresent on all workspaces.
7648e92c dan1999-06-02 22:31:46 +0000703To set/reset this flag use the clip menu.
704The Clip menu changed in the following way:
705 - if you bring up the menu from the Clip's main icon, it will contain as
706 before the "Rename Workspace" entry in the second position.
707 - however, if you bring up the menu from any other icon in clip, the
708 "Rename Workspace" menu entry is replaced by "Omnipresent" or
709 "Toggle Omnipresent" depending on the context.
710
711This entry will work in the following way, depending on the context:
712
7131. If there is no icon selected in the clip, then the menu will contain the
714 entry named "Omnipresent" which will be checked accordingly to the current
715 state of the icon (omnipresent or not), and will let you change the
716 omnipresent state of the icon you brought the menu from.
7172. If one or more icons are already selected when the Clip menu is called, the
718 entry will be named "Toggle Omnipresent" and will apply to all selected
719 icons trying to toggle their omnipresent state. The icons which will be
720 succesfully changed to their new state as requested, will be unselected,
721 while the ones that will fail for some reason to gain their new state,
722 will remain selected.

727 be met only when trying to set omnipresent for an icon).
728
729The icons set to omnipresent will be marked with a triangle in the upper left
730corner, having the color of the IconTitleColor.
731
70a363de dan1999-05-14 23:49:07 +0000732An icon can be set to omnipresent, only if its position is free in all the
733workspaces, else you will be informed of the problem and asked to fix it first.
734Also when dragging an omnipresent icon around in Clip, all the icons docked in
735all the workspaces are shown while the dragging is done, to let one easily see
736where are free slots in all workspaces.
737
7648e92c dan1999-06-02 22:31:46 +0000738For advanced users, there is also a shortcut to set/reset the omnipresent
739state of an icon: just use "Shift+MiddleButton" (button2) on the icon you want
740to change.
741In this case only the mark in the upper left corner will appear in case of
742success, or nothing will happen if icon cannot be made omnipresent (advanced
743users are expected to know why the icon failed to be made omnipresent, so they
744don't need a panel to explain them why ;) ).
745
70a363de dan1999-05-14 23:49:07 +0000746Now before you load your gun to start a flame war because this is against your
747principles you love so much, please sit down and think that this is a feature,

867To allow backward compatibility, with already written software, the old
868--lflags option is still recognized, but you are encouraged to move the the
869new --ldflags.

885
886The FullMaximize window attribute will allow the window to
887be maximized to the full size of the screen (ignoring anything
888like titlebar, resizebar, dock, panels etc). It should be usefull
889for programs that must use the whole screen, like games or things
890like presentation programs.

926----------------------
927
9a3d1fef kojima1999-03-18 04:26:47 +0000928drop shadow option added for titlebar text. This is a compile time
ea55bc5e kojima1999-03-18 01:11:18 +0000929option which needs to be defined in src/wconfig.h after you run
930configure and before you run make.
931
932New options and syntax for your WindowMaker domain file are:
933
934 Shadow = yes/no;
935 FShadowColor = <color>;
936 PShadowColor = <color>;
937 UShadowColor = <color>;
938 MShadowColor = <color>;

1007KDE and GNOME
1008-------------
1009
1010Added full support for GNOME and KWM hints.
1011Read the INSTALL file to see how enable them.
1012
1013Everything in the so called GNOME window manager bla bla bla pseudo-spec is
1014implemented.
1015
1016As for KDE stuff, it implements 90% of everything kwm does, adds some
1017Window Maker specific extensions to it and still uses half of the memory
1018kwm does, which should be enough to let you dump kwm ;) For details on what
1019exactly is implemented, see comments in src/kwm.c Read the README.KDE file
1020for more information.
1021
1022
1023WARNING: Some KDE hints are badly designed, so doing things like using
1024kpanel's desktop switcher/pager and Window Maker's internal workspace
1025management functions to create, destroy and rename workspaces at the same
1026time might cause unknown effects. To be on the safe side, only
1027use either of them to manage workspaces. Switching workspaces is hopefully,
1028safe, so you can switch workspaces from wherever you want.
1029
1030
1031
1032Workspace Specific Background Images
1033------------------------------------
1034
1035Use the WorkspaceSpecificBack to set background images for specific
1036workspaces. The WorkspaceBack is used as the default background image.
1037
1038Example:
1039
1040WorkspaceSpecificBack = ((solid, red), (cpixmap, ship.jpg, gray), (),
1041 (dgradient, red, blue))
1042
1043This will set the background image of workspace 1 to (solid, 0),
10442 to ship.jpg and 4 to a gradient. Workspace 3 and other workspaces
1045will have the image defined by WorkspaceBack.
1046
1047Note that this uses quite some memory...
1048
1049
1050setstyle/getstyle
1051-----------------
1052
1053setstyle now accepts the -nofonts flag, which will load the style
1054file ignoring all font related options.
1055
1056Example:
1057
1058setstyle -nofonts Blabla.style
1059
1060
1061getstyle can be used to create theme packs. See the usage in the
1062WindowMaker/README.themes file.
1063
1064
1065
1066New Texture Type
1067----------------
1068
1069Textured gradients will tile a texture pixmap and combine it with a gradient,
1070using an arbitrary opaqueness.
1071
1072Syntax is (thgradient, <file>, <opaqueness>, <color1>, <color2>)
1073 (tvgradient, <file>, <opaqueness>, <color1>, <color2>)
1074 (tdgradient, <file>, <opaqueness>, <color1>, <color2>)
1075where:
1076<color1> and <color2> are the colors for the gradient,
1077<file> is the texture file and
1078<opaqueness> is the opaqueness to merge the texture witht the gradient,
1079ranging from 0 to 255.
1080
1081Example:
1082
1083(thgradient, "BlueImage.jpeg", 120, white, black)
1084
1085The BlackTexture style and Checker theme are examples.
1086
1087Hints:
1088
1089You can use any type of pixmap file for this, but small (like 64x32)
1090grayscale pixmap files should get the best results (fast and low memory
1091usage). You can use color pixmaps, but it is harder to get the desired effect
1092with them.
1093
1094Be warned that this texture type is the slowest.
1095
1096
1097
1098New Options
1099-----------
1100
1101IconTitleBack and IconTitleColor control the color of the
1102miniwindow title. Both of them are colors.
1103
1104Example:
1105IconTitleColor=white;
1106IconTitleBack=black;
1107
1108
1109Since this introduces an incompatibility in themes and getting flamed by the
1110themes ppl isn't the most pleasant thing ("Whaddafuk you're thinking!? You
1111just broke 500 themes!!!" ;) the setstyle command was hacked so that it will
1112make old themes work as before, by trying to automatically set the above
1113options. Note that in some cases it will not have exactly the same results as
1114before.
1115
1116
1117StartMaximized window attribute. Will maximize the window when it
1118is mapped.
1119
1120
1121AutoRaiseLower option for the Clip. This allows automatic Raise/Lower of the
1122Clip icons when the mouse pointer enter/leave the Clip. To avoid unwanted
1123raising/lowering there is a time threshold before raising/lowering.
1124The thresholds can be changed in wconfig.h by changing one or both of
1125AUTO_LOWER_DELAY and AUTO_RAISE_DELAY (expressed in miliseconds).
1126For example if you set AUTO_RAISE_DELAY to 0, then the Clip will be raised as
1127soon as the mouse pointer enters it's area. Setting AUTO_RAISE_DELAY to a very
1128big value, will make the Clip to practically do not auto raise unless clicked,
1129but to be automatically lowered after AUTO_LOWER_DELAY (ms) when leaved.
1130
1131
1132New ThemePack Format
1133--------------------
1134
1135Starting with this version, a new format of themes is being supported.
1136Before you open pine and start composing your flame, rest assured that
1137the old format is still supported. The new format is documented
1138in the WindowMaker/README.themes file.

1148
1149will create a menu with all the images in ~/bg without the extension.

59eb9475 dan1998-11-03 12:53:26 +00001189Hysteresis for menu item selection
1190----------------------------------
1191
1192Hopefully it's intelligent enough, so you won't notice it.
1193
1194In case you want to know what's it, it's equivalent to that
1195(insanely long) 2 second delay present in that Windoze95 menu,
1196but more usefull than annoying (I hope :). To see it, do the following
1197with your current wmaker version and later with 0.20.3:
1198
1199- open the apps menu and stick it
1200- click in the item for the "Workspaces" submenu and hold
1201- drag the mouse to the 4th or bigger entry (like "Workspace 4") in a
1202straight line, trying to select the target item before the submenu
1203is unmapped when you dragged over other items in the main menu
1204
1205
1206
1207Window Shortcuts
1208----------------
1209
1210Window shortcuts are shortcuts to arbitrary windows. You can make up to 4
1211shortcuts. To assign a previously bound shortcut to a window use the "Select
1212Shortcut" submenu in the window commands menu. If the shortcut is not yet
1213assigned for any window, you can hit the shortcut to assign it to the active
1214window. The shortcut will do the same as clicking in an entry in the window
1215list menu. The keys for the shortcuts are defined in the ~/G/D/WindowMaker
1216file or in WPrefs.app
1217
1218Option names are:
1219
1220WindowShortcut1Key through WindowShortcut4Key

1230xdaliclock -shape
1231-----------------
1232
1233If you use it edit src/wconfig.h and #define OPTIMIZE_SHAPE or disable the
1234titlebar and resizebar for the window. OPTIMIZE_SHAPE will remove the
1235flickering for xdaliclock and other programs that change their shapes often,
1236but will increase network traffic considerably. So, if you use xdaliclock
1237from a remote machine it can get slow.
1238
1239
1240Applications Menu
1241-----------------
1242
1243The applications menu will now use the shell in the SHELL environment
1244variable to execute EXEC menu commands. If it is unset (I think it's always
1245automatically set by the shell program) it will use /bin/sh

1249--------------------------
1250
1251Edit src/wconfig.h and #define ICON_KABOOM_EXTRA to get
1252more effects for the icon undocking animation.
1253
1254Options for superfluous stuff are even more superfluous, so this
1255will not become runtime.
1256

1275
1276instead of:
1277
1278tar xzf libPropList.tar.gz
1279(cd libPropList; make)
1280make
1281make install
1282
1283You also don't need to worry about GNOME libPropList incompatibilities
1284anymore.
1285
1286
1287Bug with focus lost in sloppy focus fixed
1288-----------------------------------------
1289
1290The bug only occurs in sloppy or auto focus modes, with AutoFocus disabled
1291and Superfluous enabled. There is no easy/clean way to fix this, so Window
1292Maker will disable the animation of window creation if the focus mode is
1293either sloppy or auto AND AutoFocus=NO.
1294
1295If you want the animation, enable AutoFocus or use manual focus mode
1296(prefered).

1415IconPosition = c1c2c3;
1416
1417where:
1418
1419c1 can be t or b (meaning top or bottom)
1420c2 can be l or r (meaning left or right)
1421c3 can be v or h (meaning vertical or horizontal)
1422
1423case is insensitive.
1424
1425For example,
1426IconPosition = blh;
1427
1428is the old iconPosition position.
1429
1430IconPosition = trv;
1431
1432will place the icons over the Dock.
1433
1434New window attribute
1435--------------------
1436
1437EmulateAppIcon = YES; will make the window have an application icon.
1438Only use this option for fully specified windows (like rxvt.Rxvt).
1439NEVER use in generic window specifications (like * or rxvt).
1440You must restart the application for the attribute to take effect.

1475-------------------
1476
1477Format for property list menus has changed! The redundant array for
1478submenus was removed, so a menu that looked like:

1548
1549PixmapPath was split to PixmapPath and IconPath. PixmapPath is the path
1550for the pixmaps used as textures and IconPath is for the icons.
1551Don't forget to add IconPath to your current configuration file.
1552
1553There's also a new library in ~/GNUstep/Library/Icons. You should place
1554your icons there, since icons are not a WindowMaker specific resource.

1591Misc. Changes
1592-------------
1593
1594Removed --with-gnome and made MWM_HINTS defined by default.
1595This means that "GNOME support" will work with no additional
1596flags passed to configure.
1597
1598Added support for KDE, by adding a DisableWorkspaceMouseActions option.
1599Set it to YES and run krootwm to be able to use everything in kfm.

1601
1602Shortcuts for Root Menu
1603-----------------------
1604
1605There is now a new SHORTCUT optional keyword for the menus.
1606For example, you can bind Control-F1 to xterm with:
1607
1608"XTerm" SHORTCUT Control+F1 EXEC xterm
1609
1610or F2 to ARRANGE_ICONS with:
1611
1612"Arrange Icons" SHORTCUT F2 ARRANGE_ICONS
1613
1614
1615All commands allowed in the menu file accept the keyword, except for
1616MENU and OPEN_MENU
1617
1618
1619Interface Changes
1620-----------------
1621
1622** Configuration of docked applications is now done in a panel instead of
1623in the menu.
1624
1625** Added a command menu for application icons

1650Renamed NoAutowrap to DontLinkWorkspaces
1651
1652Renamed NoDithering to DisableDithering
1653
1654Renamed NoAnimations to DisableAnimations
1655
1656Removed the LeftHanded option and added a SwapMenuButton option.
1657SwapMenuButton will make the rubberband selection in the root window
1658be bound to the right button and the root menu to the left button.
1659
1660
1661New way to display temporary icons
1662----------------------------------
1663
1664The icons that are attracted by Clip, but will not be kept after the
1665application close, are now using a different color for shading, unlike previous
1666version that always used white. This will improve look for very different color
1667combinations, and allow the user to control the look of the shaded icon.
1668The color used for shading the icons is computed as follows:
1669
1670First a color is computed depending on the IconBack type:
1671 - for solid the color is the solid color itself.
1672 - for simple gradients the color is (from_color + to_color)/2.
1673 - for multiple gradients, the color is the first color in list.
1674 - for pixmaps, the color is the solid color specified for that pixmap.
1675
1676Then the color is made lighter by multiplying each red/green/blue filed with
16771.7 and limiting each field to 0xff in case they exceed this value.
1678Then this new color will be used by superposing it with the icon we want to
1679shade, using a proper alpha value.
1680
1681To control the color for shading is simple:
1682
1683- In case of multi gradients you just need to put the first color, as the color
1684you like. WindowMaker do not use the first color in the list to directly build
1685the gradient, but only when it needs a solid color for something (like in this
1686case).
1687
1688- For pixmaps, put the needed color as the solid color the syntax for pixmaps
1689require. This color is also not used when displaying normal icons, just when
1690solid colors are needed (like this case).
1691
1692- For solid color, or simple gradients, in case the color it uses after
1693computing is not good enough, you can always convert the solid or simple
1694gradient to a multi gradient with the same look, and use that one. In this
1695case is simple, just put the needed color as first color in list.
1696
1697Please note that this will not slow down WindowMaker, because the IconBack is
1698read only once at startup, and then only if it is changed. After reading it WM
1699will construct the image of the tile, and use the image instead of recomputing
1700the gradient every time.
1701
1702Here are 2 examples of converting solid or simple gradient to a same looking
1703multi gradient:
1704
1705IconBack = (solid, Blue);
1706will become
1707IconBack = (mhgradient , LightBlue, Blue, Blue);
1708using LightBlue as color for shading.
1709
1710IconBack = (dgradient, "#284569", "#082420");
1711will become
1712IconBack = (mdgradient, "#183454", "#284569", "#082420");
1713looking the same, but using #183454 for shading.
1714
1715
1716New Sound Server Location
1717-------------------------
1718
1719The sound server new URL is http://www.frontiernet.net/~southgat/wmsound
1720Also it seems to be running on FreeBSD too (with little changes maybe).

1731
1732
1733New Options
1734-----------
1735
1736The following new options are available:
1737NewStyle = Yes/No; (static) Replaces --enable-newstyle
1738DisableDock = Yes/No; (static) Same as -nodock command line option.
1739DisableClip = Yes/No; (static) Same as -noclip.
1740Superfluous = Yes/No; (dynamic) Replaces --enable-superfluous.
1741
1742NOTES.
1743- The static options are only read at startup. Changing them, needs to restart,
1744 so they will be accounted.
1745- DisableDock and DisableClip have lower precedence than -nodock -noclip
1746 command line options. If both option/command line option are given, then the
1747 command line option will be accounted.
1748
1749
1750Start Hidden option
1751-------------------
1752
1753The start hidden option was fixed, and made to be an application wide option.
1754It will apply to every window the application owns. Also its place in the
1755Attribute Inspector panel, changed accordingly, to reflect this.
1756The start miniaturized is however still applying to particular windows of an
1757application, unless the option is set for the class.
1758Start miniaturized, will override start hidden if both set.
1759
1760IMPORTANT NOTE.
1761Because of the way Netscape Communicator is implemented, it is NOT possible
1762to set the start hidden or miniatirized flags for it. This is because Netscape
1763chooses to send a second map event to the window it maps. This makes the
1764window to receive a second map request and to be unhidden or maximized back,
1765immediately after it was hidden or miniaturized by WindowMaker at startup.

1780Selecting Mini Windows
1781----------------------
1782
1783Now miniaturized windows can be selected as well as normal windows.
1784You can do this by Shift-Click-ing them. They will be marked, and will follow
1785you through workspaces like normal selected windows do.
1786Miniaturizing a window will no longer deselect the window, but will place the
1787icon and mark it as selected.
1788The only difference between miniaturized and normal window selection is that
1789for the moment the rubber-band selecting method works only for normal windows.
1790
1791
1792Icon Selection Panel in Attributes Editor
1793-----------------------------------------
1794
1795Now, selecting icons is as easy as clicking in the file name in a list.
1796
1797
1798Simplified Options
1799------------------
1800
1801IconSlideStep, IconSlideSlowDown and IconSlideDelay were merged to
1802IconSlideSpeed
1803
1804MenuScrollStep and MenuScrollDelay were merged to MenuScrollSpeed
1805
1806ShadeStep and ShadeDelay were merged to ShadeSpeed
1807
1808
1809Valid values for them are: Fast, Normal, Slow or UltraSlow
1810
1811If you want to fine tune the values, they can be changed in wconfig.h
1812Send me your set of values with an indication of how fast is your hardware,
1813so that I can make the default values more adequate.
1814
1815
1816New Window Attributes
1817---------------------
1818
1819Added StartMiniaturized and StartHidden as window attributes and
1820removed the previous implementation. Also removed the dock menu entries.
1821They are now settable in the Attributes Panel.
1822
1823Also added DontSaveSession attribute. This way, you won't end up with multiple
1824unwanted copies of the same app after the previous session is restored.
1825I start X with a xterm in .xinitrc instead of wmaker, wich will cause the
1826xterm restored by wmaker be duplicate. Just add -name something to the
1827xterm started form .xinitrc and mark DontSaveSession=YES for that window.
1828
1829
1830
1831User Specifiable Visual IDs
1832---------------------------
1833
1834wmaker now supports different visuals than the default one. It isn't of much
1835use for most people, but can be usefull for lucky SGI users who want it
1836to use TrueColor instead of the default PseudoColor.
1837
1838wmaker -visualid VISUAL_ID
1839
1840where VISUAL_ID is the hex code for the visual you want.
1841
1842Note: I don't have an SGI box and haven't tested it...
1843
1844
1845
1846Starting Workspace
1847------------------
1848
1849The starting workspace is identified in the following order:
18501. If the app is omnipresent will be mapped on the current workspace.
18512. Else if the application have a StartWorkspace option set as attribute
1852 then this one will be used.
18533. Else, if the application was started from Clip, the workspace on which
1854 the Clip from where it was started is used.
18554. Else the current workspace is used.
1856
1857Restoring saved sessions will always use the saved workspace, no matter
1858what other options are, except onmipresent.
1859
1860
1861
1862--- 0.15.1
1863
1864Workspace specific mini windows
1865-------------------------------
1866
1867The minimized windows can be workspace specific, being more consistent with
1868the rest. This is because minimized window represents just another state of a
1869window (like normal or shaded), which all are workspace specific.
1870This (or the old "present anywhere") behavior can be set using an option in
1871the WindowMaker database: WorkspaceTiedMiniWindows = Yes/No;
1872
1873New way to animate the blowing icons
1874------------------------------------
1875
1876There is now a compile time option that allows one to set how the icons are
1877animated when detaching from dock/clip in superfluous mode.
1878By default the classic "Falling pieces" animation is used.
1879If SPREAD_ICON is #define-ed in wconfig.h, then a "Spread in four directions"
1880animation is used instead. Take a look at the section where this is described
1881in src/wconfig.h
1882By default there is #undef SPREAD_ICON to select "Falling pieces" animation.
1883
1884Auto Colapse for Clip
1885---------------------
1886
1887The clip now supports an option named "Auto Collapse" which can be set from
1888the clip main menu. When set, clip will stay collapsed, and will show itself
1889when the mouse moves over it. While the mouse is over it, or over any of the
1890icons attached to the clip, the clip will stay uncollapsed, letting you to
1891access the attached icons. This is not true for applications like asclock, or
1892applets of that kind, because the icon window do not belongs to WindowMaker,
1893but to the application itself. For such icons you must keep the mouse over the
1894icon groundplate, else it will collapse back. But usually these type of icons
1895will not stay in a collapsed clip, since one needs to see what they show.
1896When the clip is leaved it will collapse back after a delay of 1 second, unless
1897the mouse is moved back to the clip area. The delay can be set modifying
1898AUTO_COLLAPSE_DELAY in wconfig.h. Default is 1000 (ms) which means 1 second.

1905Changed name from Fiend to Clip
1906-----------------------------------
1907
1908All occurrences of word Fiend with or without capital F were replaced with
1909the corresponding Clip (same capital).
1910This affects all configuration files under ~/GNUstep that contain this word.
1911It can be refered as "Workspace Dock" too.
1912
1913
1914New option in Clip menu, and extended Clip behavior
1915---------------------------------------------------
1916
1917The following new items are available in the dock menu:
1918
19191. Attract Icons
19202. Keep Attracted Icons
19213. Collect Icons
19224. (Un)select All Icons
19235. Remove Selected Icons
19246. Move To
19257. Start miniaturized (also available for regular dock)
19268. Start hidden (also available for regular dock)
19279. Selected
192810. Set icon... (also available for regular dock)
1929
1930
1931Here is what they do:
1932
19331. "Attract Icons" will let the Clip to attract and attach any new appicon that
1934 is created when an application starts. It will not do this if the Clip is
1935 full. If the Clip is Collapsed then the appicon will be hidden after it is
1936 attached.
19372. "Keep Attracted Icons" will tell the Clip to keep the attracted appicons,
1938 after the application is closed. Without this the appicons will vanish,
1939 leaving the Clip in the original state. If you move an appicon that was
1940 attracted from Clip to regular Dock, it will be kept when closed, no matter
1941 what "Keep Attracted Icons" is set to in Clip.
19423. "Collect Icons" will collect all appicons that are not yet attached to Dock
1943 or Clip, and attach them to the current workspace Clip. The value of
1944 "Keep Attracted Icons" will apply when applications close. If Clip is
1945 collapsed, the appicons will be hidden.
19464. "(Un)select All Icons" will select all icons in the clip if none is
1947 selected, or it will deselect all selected ones. The selected icons are
1948 marked using a small triangle in the bottom right corner of the appicon.
1949 The color of the mark is set using SClipColor in WindowMaker domain
1950 database.
19515. "Remove Selected Icons" will remove from Clip all selected icons. The ones
1952 that still run, will be detached, all the others will vanish.
19536. "Move To" will transfer all selected icons to another workspace and attach
1954 them to the Clip in that workspace. If none is selected, only the one the
1955 mouse was pressed on will be moved.
19567. "Start miniaturized" will launch (or autolaunch if set) the application in
1957 a miniaturized state.
19588. "Start hidden" will launch (or autolaunch if set) the application in a
1959 hidden state. Note that only one of the two can be set at a time.
19609. "Selected" can be used to toggle the selected state of the appicon
1961 individually. The same can be achieved using Shift-LeftClick on the appicon.
1962 In fact the intended way of toggling the selected state is by using
1963 the Shift-LeftClick on icon. The menu entry is just another way to do the
1964 same.
196510. "Set icon..." will allow one to set the image for the appicon. The image
1966 will be updated without restart, and also all appicons in the same
1967 instance.class as the one we set for, will be updated.
1968
1969So a simple way of avoiding the screen to be filled up with appicons is to set
1970the "Attract Icons" in the Clip. Also the "Keep Attracted Icons" can be set to
1971No, so the attracted icons will be deleted when application exits, thus leaving
1972the Clip clean. If also one to not want to see the appicons that keep filling
1973the Clip, he can set the Clip to be Collapsed.
1974
1975Getting rid of unneeded icons in Clip is as simple as selecting them
1976individually using Shift-LeftClick, and then using the "Remove selected Icons"
1977entry in menu.
1978
1979
1980Support for different visuals.
1981------------------------------
1982
1983WindowMaker is now able to support any visual, except DirectColor, in any
1984depth from 1bpp to 32bpp.
1985
1986One can start the X server with different visuals, by passing the X server the
1987right option. For XFree 3.3.x is -cc <id>.
1988WindowMaker is not yet able to choose a different visual from the Default one
1989on a given screen, but can use any default visual it finds, except the direct
1990color visual.
1991For example starting X like (for XFree 3.3.x, and if the driver for the
1992card supports this. Read the man page for your X server):
1993startx -- -bpp 8 -cc 0 will give you the StaticGray visual.
1994startx -- -bpp 8 -cc 1 will give the GrayScale visual
1995and so on.
1996
1997Wrlib code is now generic, and will support any visual except DirectColor in
1998any depth. Programs written with wrlib can work on different visuals from
1999the default visual for a given screen.
2000Behavior in different visuals can be tested using the testgrad program in
2001wrlib subdirectory in distribution.
2002testgrad -h will show the usage.
2003
2004Multidiagonal gradients are also implemented now in wrlib, and a new algorithm
2005is used to speed up the generation of diagonal gradients.
2006
2007
2008New arrangement of the directory structure under ~/GNUstep/
2009---------------------------------------------------------------
2010
2011To better adapt to theme support the directory structure changed under
2012~/GNUstep/Library/WindowMaker
2013
20141. Style directory moved to Styles.
20152. Added the following directories: Backgrounds, IconSets, Pixmaps, Sounds and
2016 Themes.
20173. The .style files no longer get copied in the user's Styles directory.
2018 Instead they are read from the global /usr/local/share/WindowMaker/Styles
2019 directory.
2020
2021Under ~/GNUstep/Defaults the following changes occurred:
2022
20231. A default WMState is installed by wmaker.inst.
2024 It contains the dockit program assigned to the top icon of the dock, and
2025 the wmsetbg program assigned for the drop command on both dock's and clip's
2026 main icon.
2027 Double clicking the dock's main icon will bring up dockit that will let you
2028 dock any application that do not have an application icon.
2029 Dropping an image on dock's or clip's main icon, from an Offix DND aware
2030 application, will put the image on the background tiled, and will update
2031 WindowMaker domain database file.
20322. Syntax of WMState changed a little. The old position will not be restored
2033 when you will first start the new version, but after that it will be
2034 normally remembered. This is because now the main clip icons is only saved
2035 once, not for every workspace.
2036 You should replace Fiend with Clip in any place where it appears, if you
2037 want to keep the old WMState file, else it will not work.
20383. At compile time, it will detect if you have support for tif, and will
2039 install a WMWindowAttributes with corresponding image name extension
2040 (.tif or .xpm). This is true only for pixmaps that come with the source
2041 distribution and get installed under /usr/local/share/WindowMaker/Pixmaps
2042
2043The menu file changed a lot. Old menu file will *not* work with new theme
2044support, so please upgrade.
2045
2046
2047New behavior of OPEN_MENU command
2048---------------------------------
2049
2050The OPEN_MENU command now supports the following syntax:
20511. File menu handling.
2052 // opens file.menu which must contain a valid menu file and inserts
2053 // it in current position
2054 OPEN_MENU file.menu
20552. Pipe menu handling.
2056 // opens command and uses it's stdout to construct menu.
2057 // Command's output must be a valid menu description.
2058 OPEN_MENU | command
20593. Directory handling.
2060 // Opens one or more directories and construct a menu with all
2061 // the subdirectories and executable files in them sorted alphabetically.
2062 OPEN_MENU /some/dir [/some/other/dir ...]
20634. Directory handling with command.
2064 // Opens one or more directories and construct menu with all
2065 // subdirectories and readable files in them sorted alphabetically,
2066 // preceding each of them with command.
2067 // WITH is a required keyword!!!
2068 OPEN_MENU /some/dir [/some/other/dir ...] WITH command -options
2069
2070Please note that because of the 'WITH' keyword old menu files no longer work
2071for the OPEN_MENU with a command.
2072
2073
2074Theme support
2075-------------
2076
2077Theme support is now as easy as untar-ing a tarball in the right place.
2078Because of the way OPEN_MENU works, they can be installed on a global
2079shareable basis, or for personal user use.
2080Themes installed under ~/GNUstep will be available only for a user, but
2081if if they are installed under /usr/local/share/WindowMaker they will be seen
2082by all users. This is also true for style files, background images, pixmaps,
2083etc that get installed under /usr/local/share/WindowMaker.
2084Themes can be saved or loaded using the Appereance menu.
2085
2086Also support for different IconSets is available. You can save or load a new
2087IconSet using the Appereance menu.
2088
2089Setting background images is now as simple as putting the images in the right
2090place (~/GNUstep/Library/WindowMaker/Backgrounds or
2091/usr/local/share/WindowMaker/Backgrounds, or any other place in your
2092PixmapPath). Then use the Appereance menu. They will be instantly available
2093since they are opened by a OPEN_MENU command. Also the image do not need to
2094have a .jpg or any other extension. It will be recognized anyhow.
2095As an example please see the OpenStep theme supplied with WindowMaker.
2096The OpenStep image is a jpeg file without extension.
2097
2098Please keep in mind that anything under /usr/local/share/WindowMaker will be
2099available for all users.
2100
2101
2102New options for wmsetbg and getstyle
2103------------------------------------
2104
2105wmsetbg now accepts the following options:
2106usage: wmsetbg [-options] image
2107options:
2108 -d dither image
2109 -m match colors
2110 -t tile image
2111 -s scale image (default)
2112 -u update WindowMaker domain database
2113 -D <domain> update <domain> database
2114 -c <cpc> colors per channel to use
2115
2116By default, it will try to guess if dithering is needed or not and proceed
2117accordingly.
2118Using -d or -m will force it to dither or match colors.
2119
2120Dithering for more than 15bpp is generally not needed, and will only result
2121in a slower processing.
2122Don't use dithering except when needed, because it is slower. Else rely on
2123wmsetbg which will detect if dithering is needed and use it.
2124
2125-u will update the WorkspaceBack in the default database domain file in
2126 ~/GNUstep/Defaults/WindowMaker, and let WindowMaker refresh the screen.
2127 Please note that this option only works under WindowMaker, and will have no
2128 effect under other window managers, since it rely on WindowMaker to update
2129 the image after it reads the updated defaults database.
2130
2131-D <domain> is same as above, but will update the domain <domain> instead of
2132 the default WindowMaker domain.
2133
2134-c <cpc> will set the color per channel to use. Only needed for PseudoColor
2135 visuals. WindowMaker will automatically pass the value read from the
2136 WindowMaker domain database.
2137
2138
2139getstyle now have the -t option, that instructs it to read all options
2140related to theme. Without -t getstyle will read only style options that
2141means it will not read WorkspaceBack and IconBack.
2142Use -t when you want to make a theme and need all theme options to be saved.
2143Else it will extract just a style file.
2144
2145
2146Session management support
2147--------------------------
2148
2149Two new commands are available for use in menus:
2150
2151SAVE_SESSION and CLEAR_SESSION.
2152
2153SAVE_SESSION:
2154will take a snapshot of all running applications, and their current hints
2155(shaded, hidden, minimized, geometry and workspace they are on),
2156and save it inside the WMState file. Also the current workspace we are on is
2157saved. The applications that are running and were started from dock or clip are
2158marked, so they will be attached to the corresponding dock/clip when restored.
2159This state is restored every next session, until a new one is saved or
2160CLEAR_SESSION is used.
2161
2162CLEAR_SESSION:
2163will clear any previous saved session.
2164
2165There is also a run time option named SaveSessionOnExit = Yes/No; that allows
2166one to automatically save the state of desktop when leaving WindowMaker.
2167This way next session, the state of the desktop before last exit is restored.
2168
2169Please note that if this option is set to Yes, than any manual saving of the
2170state, or any clearing of the state will be overridden when exiting
2171WindowMaker.
2172
2173These options are available under the "Workspace" menu.
2174
2175
2176User WindowMaker configuration files are now merged with global ones
2177--------------------------------------------------------------------
2178
2179When starts WindowMaker will look for database domain files under
2180$GNUSTEP_USER_ROOT/Defaults or ~/GNUstep/Deafults to be read. (In this order).
2181
2182If they are not available then it will scan for them in
2183$GNUSTEP_LOCAL_ROOT/Defaults, $GNUSTEP_SYSTEM_ROOT/Defaults or
2184/usr/local/GNUstep/Defaults (in this order).
2185
2186Even if the file was found or not, it will always load the corresponding domain
2187file under /usr/local/share/WindowMaker/Defaults.
2188
2189Then if the user file was found it will merge it over the global file, else
2190the global file will be used.
2191
2192This way any settings that are set by the system administrator in the shared
2193file will be available for users that do not have them in their config files.
2194Any option the user have in his config file will override the one in the
2195shared domain file.
2196
2197So any new runtime options that appear in WindowMaker domain, do not need to
2198be set in all user files, except the ones the user wants a different behavior
2199from the default set for all users in the shared file.
2200
2201Also it is possible for the user to not have any personal domain databases, and
2202the global shared ones will be used, but it still needs to have the directory
2203structure, so WMState gets written on session exit.
2204So all it needs to have is ~/GNUstep/Defaults directory available.
2205
2206
2207New behavior of the Slide Icons
2208-------------------------------
2209
2210Animation constants are now runtime.
2211They are:
2212IconSlideDelay = 0;
2213IconSlideStep = 5;
2214IconSlideSlowDown = 50;
2215
2216To better adapt both slow and fast machines the behavior of sliding icons
2217changed in the following manner:
2218
2219Old one was to keep moving the icon with a constant step (default 5 pixels)
2220until it reached the destination.
2221
2222Now it will use a new parameter named IconSlideSlowDown to speed up or slow
2223down the moving.
2224
2225Instead of moving it with a constant step it will use IconSlideSlowDown to
2226divide the distance to the destination, and use this value as the first step.
2227Then is will compute the remaining distance and will again use
2228IconSlideSlowDown to divide it and get the new step. And so on.
2229When the step to move becomes smaller than IconSlideStep, IconSlideStep will
2230be used further until the destination is reached.
2231
2232This way a nice deceleration effect is achieved, since while the icon
2233approaches destination, it will use smaller steps, gibing the illusion that
2234the icons is moving slower.
2235
2236IconSlideDelay will give the pause between steps, and is expressed in ms.
2237
2238Giving large values to IconSlideSlowDown (>1024 for 1024x768 screen) will
2239result in the old "constant step advance" behavior, since the computed step
2240will always be smaller than IconSlideStep, and the last will be used instead.
2241
2242Making IconSlideSlowDown = 0 or 1, will result in an instant jump to the
2243destination without any animation.
2244
2245
2246Attribute editor
2247----------------
2248
2249Because the icon images on screen automatically update after any change in
2250WMWindowAttributes domain file, the use of both Save and Apply buttons is no
2251longer needed. If one wants to just apply the setting to the current window
2252only, he will only use the Apply button.
2253If he wants them saved for all applications in the same instance and/or class
2254the using the Save button will write them to disk, and automatically
2255WindowMaker will update all the icons that need to be updated on screen.
2256
2257
2258Sound support
2259-------------
2260
2261Some basic sound support is now part of WindowMaker. The sound server is not
2262yet part of WindowMaker distribution, so you need to download it separately.
2263This is because is linux specific, and need some changes before it can be
2264included.
2265Until them if you have a linux system and want to use sound, use the
2266wmsound-0.5 available at http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Bay/7874
2267Download that package, and only build the sound server there.
2268DO NO APPLY ANY PATCHES FROM THERE!, because they are already applied.
2269Just build the sound and copy the executable in /usr/local/bin
2270Follow the rest of the install steps described there, except the patch-ing
2271procedure.
2272
2273To enable sound for WindowMaker pass --enable-sound to configure.
2274
2275Also use NoSound = Yes/No; to enable/disable sound at runtime without killing
2276the sound server.
2277
2278If you cannot set the sound to work yet, then is not for you.
2279Wait until the sound server will be fixed and will be part of WindowMaker.
2280
2281
2282New entries in WindowMaker domain database
2283------------------------------------------
2284
2285The following entries have been added to the runtime options:
2286
2287 SaveSessionOnExit = No;
2288
2289will autosave (or not) the session state on exit.
2290
2291 WindowPlaceOrigin = "64, 64";
2292
2293will offset all windows in auto or cascade placement mode with the value
2294(in pixels) before placing them on screen. First is horizontal direction and
2295second is vertical.
2296This do not apply to windows that request a specific position on screen.
2297This is useful if you want your Clip on the top left corner to not be
2298overlapped by mapping windows.
2299It will let it to have a row and a column of docked appicons near the screen
2300edge, that will not be overlapped by windows.
2301If you set it to "128, 128" it will have 2 rows and 2 columns not overlapped.
2302
2303
2304 NoSound = No;
2305
2306Enable/disable sound at runtime without the need of killing the sound server.
2307
2308
2309 MenuScrollDelay = 10;
2310 MenuScrollStep = 5;
2311
2312Constants for the menu scrolling animation.
2313
2314 IconSlideDelay = 0;
2315 IconSlideStep = 5;
2316 IconSlideSlowDown = 50;
2317
2318Constants for the icons sliding on screen. Explained above.
2319
2320 ShadeDelay = 0;
2321 ShadeSteps = 15;
2322
2323Animation parameters for shading a window. How many steps it will take, and the
2324delay between steps in ms.
2325
2326 DoubleClickTime = 250;
2327
2328The time for the double click to be considered so. Expressed in ms.
2329
2330 SClipColor = "#6f8ae2";
2331
2332Color for selected icons in Clip.
2333
2334All delays are expressed in ms.
2335
2336
2337
2338--- 0.14.1
2339
2340
2341*** Enhanced fiend clone.
2342
2343Here are the new fiend features:
23441. Keys for raising/lowering the fiend, and their default values:
2345 FiendLowerKey = None;
2346 FiendRaiseKey = None;
2347 FiendRaiseLowerKey = None;
2348
2349 All reside in WindowMaker configuration file.
2350
23512. Added posibility to launch the workspace menu with button1 click on the
2352 idle indicator of fiend, or with button3 click on workspace name on the
2353 fiend.
2354
23553. Added Control-button1-click on fiend's idle indicator, to create a new
2356 workspace and move to it. Same action as New item in Workspace menu.
2357
23584. Fiend's idle indicator do have a color that reflects its normal/collapsed
2359 state.
2360
23615. The delay between changing workspaces from fiend is now a runtime option:
2362
2363 WorkspaceChangeDelay = 700;
2364
2365 in WindowMaker configuration file.
2366
23676. Application icons can be moved between dock and fiend now.
2368
23697. The way workspaces are changed is controlled now by two runtime options:
2370
2371 AdvanceToNewWorkspace=Yes/No;
2372 CycleWorkspaces=Yes/No;
2373
2374 Both apply to either fiend navigating buttons or to next/prev worksapace
2375 keybindings. Both default to No, and are in WindowMaker configuration file.
2376
23778. Also added posibility to advance to new workspace, no matter what value
2378 AdvanceToNewWorkspace have, with Control-button1-click on "next workspace"
2379 fiend button.
2380
2381
2382*** Theme support ***
2383
2384Spixmap and tpixmap now work. Their syntax is:
2385
2386SomeStyleOption = (spixmap, file, color);
2387SomeStyleOption = (tpixmap, file, color);
2388
2389- spixmap means scaled pixmap, so the image in the file will be scaled to
2390adapt to the destination's size.
2391- tpixmap means tiled pixmap, and the image from file will be tiled in the
2392destination.
2393
2394file is searched in the PixmapPath, but can be a full path name.
2395
2396Color is used depending on which Style option is applied.
2397For example in case of titlebars, color is used for miniwindows titles color.
2398You are not restricted in selecting that color, but is better to put one
2399that matches the overall color of the image.
2400
2401Currently they apply to all the options that accept (solid, color), or any
2402type of gradient.
2403This means they also apply to WorkspaceBack and IconBack, which allows theme
2404support with the simple use of the setstyle and getstyle utilities.
2405There is no need for an extra theme manager, just to include the needed
2406options in the style files.
2407
2408In case of WorkspaceBack, color is used to be set in the background until
2409the image gets loaded and displayed. This is to avoid the stippled screen
2410the X server shows, in case the image is big and loads slow.
2411There is a small utility in the util directory, named wmsetbg which is
2412used to set the background image. This is needed for windowmaker not to
2413freeze while loading and scaling the image.
2414Currently it is hardcoded in windowmaker to use wmsetbg to set the background
2415image, and is better to use it since is smaller that other image manipulation
2416programs, and it is compiled with support for same image types as windowmaker.
2417Since it comes and is installed with WindowMaker, there will be no need to
2418download and use an external app, which also may not have support for the same
2419image types as windowmaker.
2420
2421
2422
2423--- 0.14.0
2424
2425*** Fiend clone.
2426
2427The fiend clone is a dock extender, that lets you dock more than the default
242810-12 icons in the dock. It actually lets you dock how many icons you like,
2429with a current default of 25 per workspace. The fiend have different docked
2430icons on every workspace. Also the fiend main icon shows you the workspace
2431you're on and lets you navigate through the workspaces with the small green
2432buttons on the low right corner.
2433To save screen space the fiend can be collapsed to the main icon either
2434from the fiend menu (available with right click on the fiend icons), or
2435with a double left click on the main fiend icon, which is a toggle for
2436the collapsed/uncollapsed state.
2437Collapsed state is marked by a different title color.
2438Pressing on the small buttons on the low right corner, the workspaces are
2439changed in increments of 1 to the left or right, but keeping the button
2440pressed over them will continuously advance through workspaces until the
2441mouse is moved away from the buttons or the button is released.
2442The delay between workspace changes is set by FIEND_WKS_CHANGE_DELAY in
2443src/wconfig.h, and defaults to 700 ms.
2444Unlike the dock, fiend can hold icons in any directions, and can be placed
2445in any position on screen.
2446
2447When an icons is to be docked, but the position can be either in the dock
2448or in the fiend, the dock will be used first, and the icon will be docked
2449there.
2450
2451Here are the new runtime options introduced by the fiend:
2452Files are located in ~/GNUstep/Defaults/
2453
2454In WMWindowAttributes:
2455 "Logo.WMFiend" = {Icon = "Cone.xpm";}; - icon for the fiend
2456
2457In Windowmaker:
2458 FiendMaxIcons = 25; - the max number of icons in fiend per
2459 workspace
2460 FiendTitleFont = "-*-helvetica-bold-r-normal-*-10-*-*-*-*-*-*-*";
2461 - the font used to show the current
2462 workspace
2463 FiendTitleColor = black; - color for the uncollapsed fiend title
2464 CFiendTitleColor = "#616161"; - color for the collapsed fiend title
2465 AFiendColor = "#00ba70"; - color for the workspace changing
2466 buttons, when active
2467 IFiendColor = "#008000"; - color for the workspace changing
2468 buttons, when idle
2469
2470For the ones who don't want to use fiend, there is a option to wmaker named
2471-nofiend that can be feed to the command line when starting wmaker.
2472(This is the equivalent for -nodock, but removes fiend clone).
2473
2474The syntax of WMState file have changed, but you don't have to worry because
2475WindowMaker will know to read the old format and will save it and further
2476will use the new one. You do not need to change your file, for the new version
2477to work.
2478
2479
2480--- 0.13.1
2481
2482*** Enhanced Attribute editor.
2483
2484Now you can save defaults for all windows.
2485Please note that only Icon, KeepInsideScree, and sometimes NoAppIcon
2486can be useful in a normal environment. But others may have other opinion ;)
2487If you set AlwaysUserIcon default for all windows, note that apps like
2488asclock, wmload, wmmail, wmrack, will show that icon instead of their
2489window.
2490
2491Now Attribute editor also counts for defaults saved for all windows,
2492(not only the default "No" for all options hardcoded in WindowMaker),
2493when saving options for some instance.class specification. This is to
2494save disk space by saving only the options that differs from global defaults
2495(either defaults for all windows or the hardcoded valued in WindowMaker).
2496
2497Attribute Editor now updates on the fly the appicon image or creates/deletes
2498the appicon if you set that options in the Inspector panel and Apply them.
2499Modifying Icon file, NoAppIcon or AlwaysUserIcon and Applying them will
2500result in the image update for the app-icon.
2501
2502Note that if you apply but not save these options, the miniwindow image will
2503not be updated. This is because app-icon is always on screen so it can be
2504updated, but miniwindow image is read from the defaults database and from disk
2505every time you minimize the window and is destroyed when you restore.
2506
2507
2508--- 0.13.0
2509
2510*** Atribute editor is working ;).
2511
2512How it works is quite obvious.
2513Anyway, here is a short description.
2514
2515Save - only save the configuration in defaults database and updates
2516 WMWindowAttributes
2517Apply - only applies the values to the current window
2518Revert - reverts the values from the defaults database
2519
2520Note that Save and Revert count for the window specification
2521(instance & class), that are selected, and save/use the values for/from
2522that.
2523
2524 The Update button will show the icon who's name was typed in the textfield
2525If the textfield is empty, will try to use the default icon.
2526Also saving with and empty textfield for icon, uses the default icon.
2527
2528 The Default button will use the icon in the textfield as default icon
2529and save that value in WMWindowAttributes (Note that in this case is no
2530need to press the Save button!). Also if the textfield is empty it will
2531try to use the old default icon, if available.
2532
2533*** Now menus are saved between sessions, or over a restart.
2534
2535 Just stick them to the desktop, and you will find them over sessions
2536until you close them.
2537 Please note that only the root_menu, the window switch_menu and the
2538workspaces_menu can be saved this way.
2539
2540*** Changed the lousy Windoze menu behaviour.
2541
2542This applies to 'NextMenuBehaviour = NO;'
2543
2544 Now the items are no more automatically selected if you launch the menu
2545and the mouse is over some item, if you use a short click to launch the
2546menu (shorter than the default DBL click time).
2547 If you use a longer click or keep the mouse pressed, the item under mouse
2548will be selected after that delay, and launched when you will release the
2549mouse button.
2550 If the click was short, a second one is needed to launch the item.
2551
2552*** Autoarrange icons is now a runtime option
2553
2554Use
2555AutoArrangeIcons = YES/NO;
2556in 'WindowMaker'.
2557
2558*** Added configurable horizontal resize threshold
2559
2560Use
2561 HorizontalResizeThreshold = <n>;
2562
2563This will make the n pixels at the exterior side of the corner handle
2564of the resize bar to restrict to horizontal only resize.
2565Also you can use Shift-click&drag anywhere on the corner handle to
2566restrict the resize only to horizontal.
2567Note that the Shift-click&drag does not depend of the configured threshold
2568and works completely independent.
2569
2570*** New option for OPEN_MENU (pipe from command)
2571
2572OPEN_MENU | /foo/bar/script
2573
2574will make a menu that is dinamically constructed by /foo/bar/script
2575
2576
2577--- 0.12.0
2578
2579*** New option for OPEN_MENU
2580
2581OPEN_MENU /foo/bar/pics xv -root -quit
2582
2583will make a menu with all files in /foo/bar/pics and precede them
2584with EXEC xv -root -quit
2585
2586thus, making a menu with entries like:
2587
2588
2589"marble.gif" EXEC xv -root -quit marble.gif
2590"water.jpg" EXEC xv -root -quit water.jpg
2591...
2592
2593
2594*** Multicolor gradients
2595
2596(mhgradient, colorX, color1, color2, color3, ..., colorn)
2597(mvgradient, colorX, color1, color2, color3, ..., colorn)
2598
2599You can put any number of colors >= 2.
2600
2601colorX is a special color that is used as the solid color of the
2602texture when wmaker needs a solid color (like in miniwindow title and
2603resizebar)
2604
2605*** PixmapPath format changed
2606
2607What used to be
2608
2609PixmapPath = "/usr/local/share/pixmaps:~/foobar";
2610
2611must now be
2612
2613PixmapPath = ("/usr/local/share/pixmaps", "~/foobar");
2614
2615
2616*** Added OffiX DND in dock
2617
2618Use the "Set drop arguments..." command in the menu and put a %d
2619where the dropped object string should be substituted, like:
2620
2621xedit %d
2622
2623*** Escape thingies for menu and dock commands:
2624
2625%w - substitute with current selected X window ID
2626%s - substitute with current selection
2627%d - substitute with last dropped object
2628%a(some text) - opens a input box with "some text" as a title. Then,
2629the text typed will be substituted there
2630
2631\r, \n - substitute with corresponding characters
2632
2633
2634*** The WMState file format has changed a little.
2635The Command field for the dock application list is now a normal string,
2636instead of a list. So, remove the parentheses and the commas for the command
2637and join all the parts. Example:
2638
2639if it used to be
2640
2641Command = ( xterm," -geometry", "+10+10" );
2642
2643then make it
2644
2645Command = "xterm -geometry +10+10";
2646
2647
2648--- 0.10.2
2649
2650AutoFocus = NO; disables automatic focusing of windows
2651when they are first mapped
2652
2653
2654--- 0.10.1
2655
2656titlebar gradients are in a single piece now
2657
2658the WMDock file was merged into the WMState file. You can insert this
2659file in WMState and set it's key to Dock. For example, if your WMDock
2660contains:
2661
2662{
2663 Applications = { {Command = (); }};
2664 Position = "-64,0";
2665 Lowered = NO;
2666}
2667
2668and WMState contains:
2669
2670{
2671 Workspaces = ( "Workspace 1" );
2672}
2673
2674then you can merge both and have:
2675
2676{
2677 Workspaces = ( "Workspace 1" );
2678 Dock = {
2679 Applications = { {Command = (); }};
2680 Position = "-64,0";
2681 Lowered = NO;
2682 };
2683}
2684
2685
2686
2687The configuration format has changed!! Forget everything about the old
2688format.
2689
2690dockapp was removed and the old version will not work anymore.
2691
2692the dialogs require tcl/tk. they will be rewritten in plain C
2693
2694
2695These are some tips for people upgrading from older versions and don't want
2696too many unused files around. There is no problem if you decide to keep
2697them for a while.
2698
2699 you can rm -r ~/gnustep if you don't want anything from there
2700
2701 remove the files in /usr/local/share/WindowMaker before installation
2702
2703 the /usr/local/share/pixmaps directory can be removed
2704
2705
