Explain previous commit.
Here the commit notes that should have been used.
Some fixes to make compilation with CC=g++ work.
A nasty problem is the issue with uint64_t, cf.

Besides that, it's the usual stuff related to casts and `extern "C"'.
Finally, please note that there is a buglet in the current gnulib, cf.
