Workaround for lp#1078460 in self-build.
It requires jumping through hoops to detect that any COMPILE-FILE
produced warnings of the UNDEFINED-VARIABLE kind.
Ironically, things were rosier when we didn't use a compilation-unit
in make-host-1 because COMPILE-FILE's result is enough.
